Interesting, all the confusion over lawbreaking...  Congressman stand up and applaud while our Cowboy president revels in his control of the media, and the other government divisions that are no longer checking his power.

Interesting, just after he proclaimed America's dependance on foreign oil, and claimed he was increasing funding for many superior alternatives, the New York Times comes out saying "ummm, NO, he CUT their budget and is making them lay off employees in the very areas he bragged about being our brightest future." Actually, it ISN'T totally what the NYT says... they attribute it to Bush's SOTU plan as being "ambitious" and a "lack of enthusiasm from both parties" on his plan...  As well as an interesting conversation with the Saudi Ambassador... who was in attendance at the SOTU.  Saudi Arabia exports a rather, ummm, large amount of oil to us.  Of COURSE they wouldn't be happy.  But my FAVORITE sentance is below.

"The president's tone was so changed, in fact, that some analysts said he sounded like a Democrat. Dan W. Reicher, who served in the Energy Department during the Clinton administration, said Mr. Bush's ideas showed "an uncanny resemblance" to some Clinton efforts."

And that's not even getting started on THIS!

What world is George W. Bush living in?  It's certainly not the real one!

Oil profits
In a wide-ranging interview, Bush defended the $36.13 billion profit Exxon Mobil Corp. posted in 2005 — the highest ever for a U.S. company. He said the profit reflected the market and that consumers socked with soaring energy costs should not expect price breaks.

“I think that basically the price is determined by the marketplace and that’s the way it should be,

I do admire the people who go post signs... I always applaud inside when I see them. It's sad how accurate the video is... funny isn't really a good word for it, but its well done.

Accurate comments by Senator Feingold's diary:

Pre-1776 Mentality
by Senator Russ Feingold [Subscribe]

I've seen some strange things in my life, but I cannot describe the feeling I had, sitting on the House floor during Tuesday's State of the Union speech, listening to the President assert that his executive power is, basically, absolute, and watching several members of Congress stand up and cheer him on. It was surreal and disrespectful to our system of government and to the oath that as elected officials we have all sworn to uphold. Cheering? Clapping? Applause? All for violating the law?

Senator Russ Feingold's diary :: ::
The President and his administration continue their spin and media blitz in attempts to defend the fact that they broke, and continue to break, the law.

VERY SURREAL

<>HA HA!!! CAN YOU BEAT THIS?!!!!!

We don't need no stinking oil.

Yes we do.

"Bush aides claim that Bush wants to decrease, not replace completely, U.S. consumption of foreign oil."

"One day after President Bush vowed to reduce America's dependence on Middle East oil by cutting imports from there 75 percent by 2025, his energy secretary and national economic adviser said Wednesday that the president didn't mean it literally....read on"

NY Times:

"In Washington, Prince Turki, the Saudi ambassador, said he was puzzled by Mr. Bush's words in the speech. He said he wanted to know if reducing American dependence on foreign oil also applied to other suppliers to the United States...read on"

It is rather ironic that Bush the oilman would come out in favor of alternative energy. But I believe that the time is ripe for him to push this initiative; he needs the political capital that appealing to the center provides, because he can already rile up social conservatives with that fire-and-brimstone approach of his on abortion and gay marriage.

I highly doubt he's going to actually carry through with this initiative, it could do immense good for him though, to have the illusion of energy reform. I hope the center doesn't fall for it.

The State of the Union is ... misled

Like President Bush's State of the Union address itself, the media's repetition of false claims and adoption of misleading rhetoric in covering the event were more disappointing than surprising.

CNN's Jeff Greenfield kicked things off by complaining that a Democratic member of Congress, apparently Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), "put out a scathing attack on the speech" before Bush delivered it, concluding that "there wasn't a chance in the world that this congressperson had seen the speech."

But as Greenfield surely must know, it is standard practice for the White House to release the text of major speeches before they are delivered. As Media Matters for America noted, The Washington Post posted excerpts from the speech on its website at 5:15 p.m. ET -- long before Bush's speech, and before Wexler's press release was issued.

And, before Greenfield's comments, his CNN colleague Dana Bash read viewers a direct quote from the speech. Does Greenfield think there "wasn't a chance in the world" that Bash "had seen the speech?" Has Jeff Greenfield somehow managed to spend 40 years of his life working in politics and the media without once learning of the concept of an advance copy of a speech? And if he's so out of the loop that he didn't see at least excerpts from the speech before it was given, why on earth should CNN continue to employ him as a "senior analyst"? Or was Greenfield deliberately misleading CNN viewers for the purposes of trashing a Democratic member of Congress?
