"Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can?
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man.
Imagine all the people
Sharing for the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one."
-John Lennon
So how come everyone loves this song, but nobody wants to live it out?
Every one of us learned to share when we were younger, and yet, over time, as we grew up, it's like we just forgot how. Or maybe we never really learned in the first place.
Maybe we shared just when our parents were watching, and hoarded our toys the rest of the time. Maybe we did it just to avoid a spanking, or being grounded, or having our toy(s) taken away.
Perhaps the issue is that we all need to learn how to share, and why this is a good thing, not only for others, but for ourselves.
Just imagine: "me casa es su casa", literally.
Picture farmers freely distributing their crops, and hydrogen and electric-powered vehicles that allowed everyone everywhere to travel without any cost except time.
Maybe it seems ideal. But of course, the ideal government/economy is never fully realised. But if society could get close to this ideal, the world would become a better place.
Imagine winning the war on poverty. Hungry people would be fed.
Imagine changing the fact that currently, 20% of the world's population owns 80% of the world's wealth.
Dream of the end of exploitation, greed, and starvation.
Many people may say "We've already tried communism, and it doesn't work, so let's throw the whole idea out the window."
But the world has never known communism as it should have been.
The only communism this world has experienced is that in which the government actually owns all the wealth, which is actually socialism.
What I'm talking about, what John Lennon's song talks about, is the non-existence of ownership as we know it.
It's actually, at its core, a state of mind.
Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world,"
So starting today, I consider myself possession-less.
The money in my wallet is for those in need (including myself): if a man is in need of a meal, I will use my resources to cook or buy him one, and if I am hungry, I will feed myself likewise.
My house, my furniture, my computer, my TV, my movies, my music, none of those things are mine. I will share them freely by opening my doors hospitably to strangers, letting vagabonding travelers sleep on my couch (see www.couchsurfing.org).
If someone needs to write a paper, I'll let them use the computer that I have.
If someone needs a decent guitar, I'll let them use the guitar the I play.
If someone needs a car, I'll ride the bike I've been given for a while, and that someone can have transportation.
It's radical. But didn't Jesus tell His disciples, "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers [fellow humans], is what you have done to Me,"
and He also said:
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
Just remember, sharing is caring. Try it, I think you'll like it.
May it become a way of life for each of us, to live as if we own nothing that we call ours.

I love this poem. It is very inspirational and I think all people should read it atleast once. Very nice blog post and very creative.
I completely agree with you. And, for the record, I do try to live my life this way EVERY DAY. Lead through example. My other favorite quote (also Lennon) is "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see". I like this one because it's true. It's very easy to just see what you'd like to see, and completely miss everything else, but unless you see the whole picture, it is impossible to improve.
