Discrimination Against the White Middle-Class in a College Setting

Tagged:  •    •

Most talk about racism against blacks, hispanics and asians. What about racism towards whites. Not just any whites though, middle-class whites.

Middle-class whites are basically stuck when it comes to college scholarships. They aren't rich enough to afford the colleges of their choice, but at the same time they aren't poor enough to lean on financial aid. On top of all of that they are WHITE! When is the last time that you saw a scholarship that says you have to be white in order to apply? My answer to you is never.

There are all of these scholarships that are for hispanics and blacks but none for whites. I ask what makes someone from a hispanic or black backround more deserving of a scholarship based on the color of their skin than a kid of a caucasian heritage? Nothing, just because they are considered "minorities" they are catered to. I don't mean to come off as racist but it is bogus that middle-class whites are jipped like that. Unless you are a middle-class white with superior academic abilities you are basically cut out of money for college.

I'm not saying many blacks and hispanics don't deserve scholarships but there shouldn't be scholarships geared only toward those racial groups. I believe that scholarships should be based on academic achievement and given out to the best kid not based on the color of their skin. Then I will be happy, but until then...

Obviously you have not done your research. Most scholarships that are for blacks and hispanics and other minorities are being offered by organizations that are minority organizations. So when white organizations begin to offer scholarships then you can apply... I known your intent was not to offend or accuse but I am a little upset.

Asians make up five percent or so of the US population. And by far, they have the fewest opportunities for scholarships. Everyone just assumes they're eggheads and will not need scholarships. There are scholarships for people with Irish, Scottish names, there are Jewish scholarships, as well as sports and legacy scholarships -- whites overwhelming get all of those scholarship spots. There are only two major scholarships targeting Asians last year.

Affirmative Action also doesn't impact whites as whites would like you to believe -- it impacts Asians. When Prop 209 went into effect, Asians went from 25-30% to 45% and growing.

I totally agree! I'm a middle class whit person with good grades and there is no way I'm going to get scholarships for college. Half of the ones I have look at have been for the minorities and the ones I have applied for I just havent recieved. I thought it was a good thing to be furthering my education but I just have no help.

Racism still exists, but now racism has been systematically implemented. it is subtle.
that is why we need special program for minorities who have been HISTORICALLY
underrepresented.

If you look at public colleges across america, on average it is about 75% caucasian.
the other 25% are minority citezens and foreign exchange students. African americans weren't even allowed to attend public universities until the late 50's-early 60's.

p.s. HBCU's or historically black colleges offer scholarships to white students

...IF you had any evidence to back it up. Which you don't. So it's not.

You could look up the percentage of scholarships given to white people relative to the number of white people in college. You could then compare that to the number of scholarships given top people of color relative to the number of people of color enrolled in college. You would have to adjust for financial need, of course. THEN you would have a leg to stand on. I don't know what those numbers would prove, but until you show the research, this is just another divisive post.

Also, I am a lower middle-class white person with no scholarships. I don't begrudge scholarships to anyone, for whatever reason they get them. Congratulations, you get to go to college.

And loans aren't the worst thing in the world. I'm doing grad school on loans. If you are smart with your money, you'll get them paid off in a timely fashion and they won't ruin your life. College is still an investment, not an entitlement.

there is plenty evidence.......look around....the simple fact that i got u so tiffy is fact enough......plus the statement i made about college still rings true.

your family had all the opportunities dating back hundreds of years so if you cant afford college, and your grades werent good enough to get an academic scholarship

I was saying that Matt55, the poster of the blog had no evidence in his post. He was saying that whites are discriminated against and whining about not being able to afford college, and I said he needed some solid evidence to back that up.

I AGREE with you! There is plenty of evidence that racial/ethnic minorities are institutionally discriminated against. I'm writing my master's thesis on the achievement gap and the institutional policies that encourage it. I am a fan of affirmative action.

Read the comment more carefully! I know this has been an emotional issue for you, and I've read the abuse you've taken in standing up for yourself, but be careful not to get blinded by the emotion, okay?
