Illinois week after two tough games

First off, I am impressed with how all of your so called role players have stepped up and met the challenge of having to play really meaningful minutes. They've played hard, and for the most part, smart against MD and AZ.

Anyway, here are a couple impressions I have after seeing the two games (most are obvious):

1) Warren Carter needs to be in the lineup even with Randle and Smith back. He does a good job of moving without the ball, can hit the jumper, and most impressively to me, has rebounded well and has not looked afraid to mix it up inside. Kid deserves to play.

2) Illinois' perimiter defense needs work. Obviously, this should improve when Randle gets back. Until then, from what I've seen Illinois has stretches where they can't effectively guard the dribble drive, and don't seem to rotate to the open shooters. Could it be a problem of quickness?

3) Mental mistakes have killed Illinois in both games. Killed is probably too harsh a word, but because it was experienced players making these mistakes I think it's apt. However, I do think these two games will do wonders for the mental makeup of this team down the road. These kids now know they can play with anyone, even without a full cast of characters.

4) While fundamentally sound, Illinois is going to continue to struggle with athletic teams. Gameplanning and execution will help to neutralize the athletic disparity, I think, but Illinois might get "out athleted" at times this year.

5) This is a solid club. When all the parts are assembled, I think they are definitely top 3 in the Big 10 and will be dangerous come NCAA time.

6) Is it just me, or does Bruce look like he has abnormally short legs when he's running around out there?
