Ahhh, Mother’s Day. A day where we are to sit down and remind ourselves just how important our moms are. They carried us around for nine months. They took/will take care of us for 18 years. Mommies are important… I mean, without them, where would we be? Everyone in this world, at one point or another, has a “Momma”.
…But did you know of a holiday called “Birth Mother’s Day”?
Yeah, it really exists. It’s the Saturday before Mother’s Day, and it’s been going on since 1990, which means that yesterday was the eighteenth celebration of Birth Mother’s Day.
What is “Birth Mother’s Day”? It’s a holiday for those women who gave up their children for adoption. It’s a holiday for those women who won’t be able to celebrate the following day with at least one of their children, because they chose to give someone else the most precious gift of a baby.
What’s the point of having a “Birth Mother’s Day”, you might ask? It’s to distinguish the fact that some women choose to allow their child to grow up in another person’s home. Whether the biological mother remains in the child’s life or not post-adoption, the fact remains that the baby is still alive, and there was a woman somewhere who gave birth to it. This is different than “Mother’s Day”, because the situation is different. They gave life to the child, and another person or two raised it.
I see no problem with celebrating “Birth Mother’s Day”. I actually see it as a very, very touching holiday. Yeah, Hallmark hasn’t picked up on it – yet (I have “faith” in them), but the lack of cards doesn’t make it any less special… It’s a celebration of women everywhere who gave other women a reason to celebrate Mother’s Day.

This is my first time hearing of Birth Mothers Day. Very interesting. I would celebrate it cause at least they gave their children for adoption rather than having an abortion!
It's a wonderful holiday, in my opinion. For all those mothers out there, who, for some reason or another had to give up a child they wanted to raise, they have a day to be honored, whereas Mother's Day will only remind them of what they've missed out on. And it's special for those children given up for adoption. If they remember or know their birth mothers, or even if they never knew them, it's a day to be grateful for the woman who brought them into the world.
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
