So, we've got this petition, and before we present it to the school board, we are going to publicize it with a press conference.... trouble is none of us know exactly how to do that... so my question to you is, how do I have a press conference? What do I need to do?

go to your local news station (one that has high ratings) and tell them that you want to have a press conference over whatever the issue is. tell them that you have a petition signed by how many ever people signed it and that this is a huge issue. you have to make it sound news worthy or they won't do it.
Um, I'm not exactly sure how a press conference works in a school. But based on the idea behind normal press conferences, I'll venture some suggestions.
The goal of a press conference is to present an audience a new idea, a explanation of something you feel have been misinterpreted, or basically an answer to a commonly posed question. With the number people in this world, it is impossible to call every single people to a "town meeting", thus it is accomplished by holding a press meeting with the relevant media personnels, who have the ability to pass on the information to society.
Now based on what you've said, I'm assuming your audience is a student body. Before you try anything, it is wise to contact school officials to see what is allowed. Then I suggest that your relevant "media personel" might include the student government offcials, the student paper, a few faculties, and an audience of interested students. You might want to post flyers, or make announcements. During the press conference, you basically state what your petition is about and how it will benefit everybody and take note of the questions and suggestions made by your audience. After you get your feedback from the the press conference (assuming it's positive), you then make the report to the school board, maybe having some of the supporting faculty with you also.
no, we don't want our press conference to be in the school, we want it to be public.
