We're sell-outs. We'll rebel our whole lives as teenagers, constantly defying the authority telling us not to do... whatever it is that we want to do that parents and teachers don't want us to do.
Then we become adults and turn into the same people we were rebelling against. Our parents smoked pot in high school and got pissed when their parents told them not to do it... but then do the same to us when we try it out.
This isn't even a call for parents to stop telling their kids what to do. If your 14-year old daughter is out having sex or doing drugs, you're a horrible parent if you just let it go. When someone isn't nearly mature enough to understand the consequences of their actions (pregnancy, disease, death), they don't have the right to make their own decisions. That's why parents exist.
But when you get to that 17, 18, and even 19 age, and you have the unfortunate decision of being mature and smart enough to make your own decisions, but still having to live at home with your parents who don't realize that you're mature enough, you have every reason to put your foot down.
And of course you will, because you've been doing it since you were 13. The only difference is that now you're actually right, when before you just thought you were right.
But then you get older, you have kids, and you become the same thing you've been rebelling against. We get all fired up when we finally get out of the house and get to make our own decisions, but then we turn right around and lock our children up until the day they do the same to us.
Get smarter.

"When someone isn't nearly mature enough to understand the consequences of their actions (pregnancy, disease, death), they don't have the right to make their own decisions. That's why parents exist."
This is an excellant statement and makes the blog. This applies to so many current issues. Amazing revelation. I was going to pick on existance part but everything I came up with did not work.
Good job

Kids this age are only slightly more mature than 14 years olds. I'm sure they feel very mature and vastly smarter then their parents but that does not make it true.
I thought I was an addult when I was 19 too. Looking back its funny. I see 118/19 year olds now and think ...should children that young be out without their parents.
Ha

Hey! What do you think I am, a baby?
Well, I do call myself that sometimes because I tend to be younger in my workplaces, my classes, and my group of friends... but ...
I resent that statement!

Haha!
No, I completely understand where you're coming from.
I know 8th graders probably look like INFANTS to you, but I remember how "big" I felt when I was in 8th grade... I remember being "head of the school" and looking down on the poor little 6th and 7th graders.
Then yesterday, while waiting for my ride after work, two little girls (who I'm assuming just finished their 7th grade year) walked by talking about how "we're not even 7th graders any more. We're in eighth grade now." I bet they feel SO grown... and I was wondering why two 13 year olds were walking around Lakewood alone. lol.

Okay... homeless man... not quite mountain man. Although I haven't totally let it flow as of yet. Maybe I'll have a three-month beard binge sometime.
My friend would start growing out a beard about a month before finals every semester. He called it his "mountain man" beard, until finals week, when it became his "finals" beard. And then, when finals were over, he'd have a party to celebrate shaving again.
I hang out with weird people. :-P

My age don't matter but i agree
Now the Sex age bothers the hell out of me
screw it i am 17 and am now a senior but i see Freshman everyday talking about how many times they've had sex and it creeps me out. Think about it they were in MIDDLE school and having sex, MIDDLE school
It's a little gut wrenching to think that someone barely hitting puberty is doing it
What the hell is wrong with them
how do you make that better
it just worrys me to know that my 10 year old sister will be growing up to that soon.
its just rancid

Just so you know your idea just creeped me out. I have young ones that are trying to learn to read and bike, now I have to worry about them having sex cause they want to...Damn it.
I better go instill some discipline now. Thanks

truly i am
but here's my BIG question
how do you curb this till kids are the right age
now personally i think the right age is about 17-20 when people really fully understand the responsibility and the implications sex brings
but how do you do it. Of course younguns' have to know about sex but they need to know that sex and age is a HUGE deal. People can't ignore the issue and can't pretend its not there yah know... but how and when?

I knew the answer to this once. I think its a stage thing, with certain thing appropriate at a certain age. Right now we are the stage of 'nobody but mommy and daddy, and the doctor with permission can touch you here...for washing only... your a big boy and can usually do a pretty good job your self. anyone other reason any other person you should not let them...scream leave call your mom'....he understands. He is squimish and does not like being touched anyway so I was not that worried when I found out an sexual abuse case closer to home then I like, we still talked.
I think the best this is talking AND LISTENING and education of personal moral values is the best we can do. Right now parents are over worked and broke, the kids have the TV with all the skinny sex appeal, they are just doing what is taught. It comes down to communication and attention... they wont have to go else were with the wrong answers to find it.
But I do not have the answer
