Seeing this movie was not a complete waste of time just because I got to laugh with my friend about how terrible it was. We both looked at each other with the same "what the hell" look on our faces numerous times. Then we walked out. The charactoers were underdeveloped, the scenes and transitions unimaginative. All together, the film looked like it was thrown together with very little thought. A sorry excuse for a musical.
Everyone, knows that if you want an Academy Award (which equals mega sales), you should make a movie about a famous singer from a few decades back, preferably one who has recently passed away. Throw some trendy actors in the mix and you've got it made.
The fact that this movie got nominated for more than one Academy Award is even more evidence for my theory that the only reason most people think a movie is good is because it rises just slightly above the half assed, made for profit only, recycled storyline shit that is today's mainstream cinema. Do yourself and the world a favor and go see a foreign or indie film and give money to the talented storytellers that deserve your support. Check out IFC.com if you haven't already.
