Are We Judging Dogs by Color Too?

Not only do people judge humans by their color, religion, and such, now dogs are included in that as well. Large black dogs, such as Rottweilers and Labrador Retrievers, are becoming hard to be adopted. And this is a result of them being born the color black. Take Gozer, for instance. Gozer is a Rottweiler-hound mix living in California. As a puppy, he was passed around for a month before ending up with his current owner. He’s not aggressive and doesn’t bark. But because of movies like “Rottweiler”, “The Omen”, or “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, people are simply afraid of these large, black dogs. Animal shelters are beginning to call this the “Big Black Dog Syndrome”.
What do you think of when you see a “Beware of dog” sign? A gigantic black beast, coated in muscles. Do you see the drool dripping from its mouth? The dogs that are associated with these signs are trained for that job. Most house dogs, big and small, are good natured. It’s the people who surround them that turn them into the monsters we’ve all come to fear.
There may be some good news yet. A web site call blackpearldogs.com is working on showing people the advantages of owning a black dog. “Their color doesn't clash with furniture or clothing, hides dirt well, and is easy to accessorize. In other words, black dogs could be the new black.”
