I Know I Would Climb the Mexico-U.S. fence!

On October 4th, President Bush signed a bill for the use of $1.2 million dollars for hundreds of miles of fencing between the U.S. and Mexico.  Other additions to the plan include more vehicle barriers and cameras.  The wall is not solid, and basically it will not be able to stop illegal immigration.  One mexican man said that he would try to cross the wall atleast three times.  Illegal immigrants are not being intimidated by the plans to build a fence-like wall.  While the wall appears as a attempt to decline illegal immigration, congress argued that the wall was a form of security to keep terroists from crossing from Mexico into the United States.  (No evidence of terroists leaking into the United States from Mexico has been shown)  The Mexican government is upset with the seven hundred miles worth of fence, and they even threatened to take the issue to the United Nations. Personally, I do not believe that the wall is going to benefit any more.  If a migrant is convinced to enter the United States, they will find a way to get around the wall or a way to climb over it.  As neighbors to Mexico, should we not be coming up with more friendly immigration policies that will encourage legal immigration.  Instead we are just building a wall that is causing more resentment.  Additionally, I do not believe that the wall is going to prevent terrosits from entering.  The wall is a waste of money as a determined man or woman could easily tackle the obstacle.

I'm definitely with you on that one. The idea that a wall is going to stop people from getting in to the U.S. is absolutely preposterous. Sure, it may make things a little harder, but let's think about this deeply. These people are miserable and are coming here looking for a better life. Now, if it was you, would you give up just because someone stuck a wall in your way? There are walls surrounding jails and prisons, yet people escape everyday. Furthermore, we could consider the Berlin wall. That wall, while keeping many people on their respectiive sides of Berlin, by no means stopped the most determined. When the wall was torn down, we found all sorts of tunnels and ways people had gotten through. Those people really wanted through, and just like these people, illegal immigrants from Mexicio will get through if they want it enough.

Besides, even if we did manage to keep illegal immigrants from coming in through Mexico with this wall, most of the illegal immigrants to this country don't even come in through there. Many people don't realize it, but there are more coming in from our northern border. We just don't complain about it because a lot of these people are white, and therefore harder to distinguish in a crowd, and we also think of them as more productive residents than their hispanic counterparts.

I agree that a wall isn't going to do any good; if people really want to stop illegal immigration then the US should adopt harder policies on the issue. But I don’t see that happening.
Building a wall, but still issuing an amnesty every 10 years is not going to stop illegal immigration. Many think it is worth the risk for the chance that they will be better off, and frankly I would too.

Most problems in the world do not have a silver bullet answer and take multiple things to solve. A fence will not be a silver bullet but it will help, as it has been shown that areas that have built fences already have seen a decrease in illegal alien crossings.

What irritates me is that ten fences could be built with the pork that the Democrats added to the recent Iraq bill.

The closest thing to a silver bullet answer is to crack down on businesses hiring them, and deport the illegal aliens. Stop handing out freebees to them, and start enforcing the laws. That, coupled with a fence, would solve the problem.

As a citizen it helps to get involved. The Federation For American Immigration Reform (www.fairus.org) has a lot of resources to help get educated on what illegal immigration is costing you and your state, and resources to contact your congressmen. Get involved! If your congressmen hear from YOU they will be more likely to get working on real, effective solutions.

you have a good point, but the government is going more for concept here. it's a sign of good will to the U.S. people who are adamant to this issue that it is taking action and not sitting back while all this is happening.
