Wal-Mart

So Wal-Mart and I have a love-hate relationship. I love shopping there and getting more for my money. Since I am a high school senior who is desperately trying to save money for college, Wal-Mart is good for me. On the other hand, I do not like the way in which they go about making their prices so cheap.

Of course when people walk into Wal-Mart it isn't hard for them to see that they hire the people in our country who need jobs the most. The senior citizens, teenagers, etc. Because of that, I thank Wal-Mart! They do seem to treat their workers well.

However, does anyone besides me ever wonder how their prices stay so low? Why is their roll back smiley always smiling? Could it be child labor that makes these significantly low prices possible? Since I am currently considering elementary education or child psychology as a future career this upsets me greatly. Is Wal-Mart taking advantage of these people in order to make their profits. I honestly don't know much about this except what I have heard in my Economics class and from movies we have watched in school. Therefore, I am asking you guys. What do you think of Wal-Mart?

If the subject interests you, maybe you should do a little research on it. Might help you out if there really is child labor at work.

I believe the prices are so low because everything is imported from China and other countries where the people will work for less money. Also, WalMart is big on innovation and changing the course of business. They actually invented the barcode pricing on products, did you know that?

Yeah I heard about the barcode thing. It kind of scares me how much influence one business can have on a country.

I share similar views that you do. The people that I know who shop at Walmart, chose to shop there because they can not afford to shop at some other places. I can not blame these people for shopping there. I understand that their low prices are what helps some people make it to pay the rest of their bills. I have heard much and seen a few documentaries about Wal-Mart though. I have heard and learned that Wal-Mart takes advantage of the people that work for it. As you said, they offer jobs to a lot of people who may otherwise not have a job. However, from my readings on Wal-Mart, it has seemed that the conglomerate uses its employee's need for a job against them, and that is why it does not offer the benefits that other employers do. I remember one documentary that focused on how Wal-Mart stores would give their workers tasks to do that they knew could not be completed within one's scheduled hours and therefore required that the workers stay later without paying them overtime. I remember that the documentary included former walmart employees who claimed that their managers would say that their jobs were at stake if they did not do what they were told.

I did a simple google search, and I found this site that you might want to check out: http://walmartwatch.com/

I feel like a lot of people HATE Wal-Mart. I often question of the information and claims that I hear about Wal-Mart are true. I am sure that the website I suggested is biased, because it is obviously run by an organization that is anti-Walmart. But I think that it could give you some insight into the accusations that have been brought against wal-mart and possibly some answers to your question about how walmart is able to keep their prices so low (by failing to meet other standards).

Just keep in mind, that is just one side of the story.

My shop-lifting friends tell me Wal-Mart is quite popular for shoplifting activities. :)
