Why do so few people not get their animals spayed and neutered? This question is present in my mind constantly, and I can never quite reach a conclusion. Is it that people are scared that their dog will get hurt? Or maybe they just don't feel the need? Whatever it is, people need to wake up and smell reality.
A cat or dog that is not fixed runs the risk of getting pregnant, or getting another animal pregnant. What happens then to their offspring? They can end up feral (wild) and get hit by cars, they can end up in shelters, or they can be kept by someone who will not get them fixed, repeating the cycle. Animal shelters are already overpopulated with cats and dogs that are unwanted, and a lot of them get put down simply because there is no room for them.
In the US, over 3 million pets get put down every year. This is not fair to the animals. They did nothing wrong, they were just unable to find homes in time. In states where gassing animals is legal (a slow, painful process of killing animals with a type of poison gas), a majority of those gassed are puppies and kittens. The gassing of animals is used because it is cheaper and they are able to kill a larger number of animals than with the injection.
Getting your animal fixed can calm them down, prevent marking in the house, lessen their need to run and find a female in heat (hounds especially are dogs that are notorious for running away, especially ones that are not fixed), prevent bloodstains from females in heat, and overall help lessen the overpopulation problem. Guys are a bit more reluctant to get their male dogs fixed because they sometimes thinks that is makes their dogs less masculine, or they feel as if getting them fixed reflects on them a negative light. Get over it, guys, because if your dog gets out and gets a female pregnant, that is your responsibility.
Please Spay and Neuter your pets.
Spay and Nueter your pets please!!

I agree with you, but the argumentative side of me came up with these questions on queue.
1.) Who decision was it to make these animals only of the domesticated kind? Wouldn't that be making them slaves?
2.) Why do we see wild animals, dogs and cats included, as pests to be killed? They were wild long before humans came along to decide their fate.
Just some random thoughts to go along with your debate. Though, as I said, I think pets should be spayed or neutered for the sake of keeping the wild animal population down so that they don't get sick from the complications of not being a spoilt pet.
