Tre Arrow: kindhearted environmental activist or eco-terrorist?

So one of the biggest regional news stories this week was the return of Tre Arrow to Portland Oregon and the perhaps related, perhaps unrelated firebombing of some newly built homes in Seattle by Earth Liberation Front (ELF.) The ELF group left a banner at the scene claiming responsiblity for the blaze, and while the banner said nothing about Tre Arrow (the banner most talked about the homes being built in an unsustainable, not-green manner,) it seems likely that they timed the burning to coincide with Tre Arrow being returned to Portland to await trial for a firebombing he was blamed for in April 2001 of concrete-mixing trucks at Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company in Portland and logging trucks at Schoppert Logging Company in Eagle Creek near Mount Hood in June 2001.

The event Tre Arrow is really known for, however, is sitting atop a 9-inch ledge outside the office window of Harv Forsgren, the Regional Supervisor of the U.S. Forest Service for ll days. Tre spent his days speaking to international media and the large crowd which had gathered below on behalf of the trees at Eagle Creek, which the Forest Service had decided to sell. Largely because of his efforts, and the efforts of a team of activists he had gathered, the sale was haulted.

Tre has organized and been active in many tree sits around the Portland Oregon area; in fact, the tramia surgeon whose house I lived at for a year and whose son I nannied for, treated Tre for broken bones after falling at a tree-sit. She recalls him as being "odd" and wanting his friends to bring him organic vegan food and sheets laundered in Earth-friendly soap, which she agreed to.

Anyway, now Tre is facing trial after being in Canada for a long time and he claims the U.S. government pegged these firebombings on him because he is an easy target; they've considered him an eco-terrorist for years and noticibily targeted him for eco-activities in the Portland, Oregon area.

Read more about Tre Arrow at the very biased (in his favor,) Free Tre Arrow website http://trearrow.org.

I'm torn at the moment about who Tre Arrow is...if you read Fox News or the Oregonian, for example, he comes off as a mean-sprirted environmental zealot who will do anything to "Save the Earth," even if it means hurting people. But once you start reading what liberal media and radical media says about Tre Arrow, and Tre's own blog posts, you begin to think Tre might have been framed, as he claims.

I dunno; let me know what you guys think?

Thank you for writing about this! I checked out the arrow website, and I can only agree with your assumptions of character. Seems like a very down-home kind of guy.

when he was on the ledge I was fine with his activism. When he burn trucks and detrys personal property, and endangers others. That is terrorism and I for one was shocked they gave im a deal.. I know i might be upset his followers. I cant see the company burnng they're own equipment just to frame some guy who was a nn issue at the time. I believe he set the fires because no one was takig him seriously.but I could be wrong..
