My First Blog: My War Against Intolerance

Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be doing, but I'm going to give it a try.  From what I understand, we are allowed to write about pretty much anything.  So, with that said, here we go.

Many people believe that America is the "land of the free".  That we are allowed to do alot of things as long as it doesn't hurt another person or of course not pull their own weight (taxes pay for the things you use everday such as roads and school).  We believe in majority rule, minority rights.  That is that the majority has the say, as long as it doesn't take away the minorities' rights.  Since the United States has been established we have slowly giving this freedom to minorities, but not without a fight.  Native Americans, African Americans, women, and immigrants have all been given rights.  These have not come easy however, many people were against these changes.  These groups had to fight for what they thought was right but shouldn't have had to.  American is "free" isn't it?  Then why are some groups told indirectly, "Well not for you because you're of a certain group."  Isn't it "all men are created equal"?  People throw that phrase out and the people against the change stumble to find a reasoning in their theory.  Now, you're probably think, "Where are you going with this?"  There is a group now looking for their rights-homosexuals.  No, I'm not gay.  I know sombody will ask me that, but that's not the point.  The point is that we should not be taking away their minority rights just because we don't agree with them.  It shouldn't be, "I don't like gay people, so they shouldn't have any rights."  Maybe alot of people don't like you, but that doesn't mean that you don't get any rights.  Yes you can be against gay people, that's your RIGHT.  However, they also have a right and you should not take that away just because you think differently then they do.  We need to be toleranct to other views.  Just because you think a certain way doesn't mean everybody thinks that way, and people need to be aware of that.  Isn't that what America's all about?  We came to America because we had different views.  We wanted to be able to be DIFFERENT.  And now everybody's saying that different is bad, and that everybody has to think the same way and like the same things.  I say that diversity makes people stronger and smarter.  If you only see your view and nobody else's, you become ignorant.  Who wanted to be around people like that?  I sure don't.  We don't have to agree with everything that goes on, we just have to be tolerant to people with different views.
