Cost of making items in the United States

Tagged:  •

Did you know that it costs more to make things in the United States then in other countries around the world? In the United States to produce something, the makers have to pay for the parts (they are imported sometimes) and the most expensive part -the labor. The people who work in the United States always want to be payed more and more, usually higher then the minimum wage. The workers want benifits as well: Benifits for heath, benifits for the dentist etc... Therfore, many companies are now producing their items in other countires. They are able to pay less for the parts, pay for the labor in the other country, and pay to have the item shipped back to the United States all for less then it would cost to make in the same exact item in the Unites States.

So... What do you think about the cost of labor in the united States?

On one hand, I'd rather pay more for U.S. labor than pay for some twelve-year-old in a third world country work an eighteen hour day so I can get my Nikes. However, I also think that U.S. laborers need to be more realistic in their demands and realize that life doesn't get handed to you on a silver platter. There is way too much hand-holding in this country. There's got to be a happy medium.

Regardless, it is certain that over time workers in third-world nations will go through the same process we did. They will realize they don't have to work like slaves for $0.05/hr, and they will form unions or union-like entities and demand higher wages and more benefits. And in some cases they will end up with useless unions that bog down the system and no longer help, but hinder, and actually assist companies in bankrupting themselves and eliminating jobs for American workers, just like us.
