Last night there was a republican debate held at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. 6/10 Republican candidates decided to show up for this event at a historically black college. " Fred Thompson was at a
fundraiser in Franklin, Tenn. Mitt Romney was gathering money in Rancho
Santa Fe, Calif. Rudy Giuliani was near Napa raking in some last-minute
cash. John McCain spent the day in New York City, giving a speech and
raising money." (Michael D. Shear: Washington Post) Apparently it was more important for the top four candidates to be other places than giving the predominately black community of Baltimore, MD the time of day. The other republicans that were there did have their chance to shine and they took the opportunity to put the top four republicans down. Now I don't care what you're doing, they showed up for other debates and this debate was a planned event. It's not like they just decided to do it yesterday. This was a good chance for these candidates to really appeal to the minority and its like they don't care whether or not they get your vote. Wake up Republican Candidates, I've got news for you, THE MINORITY MAKES UP A BIG PERCENTAGE OF YOUR VOTERS AND MINORITIES TEND TO STICK TOGETHER! And that's just the truth. I'm not trying to make waves, its true that minorities tend to stick together on issues. Last night was Fred Thompsons, Mitt Romney's, Giuliani's, and McCain's chance to talk about issues that really matter to minority voters like: unemployment, criminal justice, health care. And what were they thinking skipping out on an event like this ESPECIALLY when this whole thing is going on with Jena 6 right now. It makes me question: do they really care? Are minorities votes just not good enough for those candidates? I am happy for the candidates that did show up. It really was there chance to show why they're a 100x better than the ones who didn't. What is this country coming to? Why are we here again? Every vote counts and the candidates more than anyone should know that.
Blacks: you're just not good enough

It was a missed opportunity for Republicans. But truth be told, minorities have always favored liberal canidates over conservative ones so Republicans today don't feel like they(minorities) are worth their time.

I just don't understand why minorities especially blacks tend to see everything as discrimination. The truth is blacks discriminate so much that it is pure hypocrisy that many of them talk about racism. If the only things that are promoted best about your culture are gangs, gender discrimination and violence in general; i as a presidential candidate would have nothing to do with that race. Some of these candidates have skipped other debates and even primaries, but it's a crime that they're skipping another debate: just because blacks are involved. I believe the most color sensitive people in our society is not the majority. People like Bill O' Reilly who try to put a positive image of blacks out there are castigated while those who broadcast black indecency are loved- Its time black got over themselves, realize their friends from their foes.
I think you need to check yourself. You probably dont even know any black people personally talking like that. The black people you see on television may support the image you speak of but it does not include everyone. Just as if I was to use the crazy cut people body part, and screwing little boys in churches, and serial killer images of whites on you dude so dont get it twisted . It is just not right for you say stuff like that. It is unnecessary. Whites started "racism", "sexism" and gangs of kkk if you really want to get honest. So say something about that. Do not get caught in the video hype. Just cause its out there for entertainment do not forget this is America the land of the free and home of the brave literally.Peace out BLEEP.

I've personally seen a lot of black people play the discrimination card (gotta love working retail). Between that and nearly every portrayal of a black person, it's not hard to see why a lot of people believe the things they do about the African American community.
Perhaps the black community should start acting like professionals and get rid of this whole "acting black" or "acting white" and stop playing the discrimination card whenever anyone does anything they don't like?

We do realize are friends and foes as a generalization. We just dont walk around wearing t-shirts to say it.

I agree with sportominc. Does this mean I'm racist? I don't hate African Americans. I have many friends who are blacks and I love them to death. But many other African Americans are assuming everyone is against them. It hurts me that they would take little comments from white people and twist it around to give it another meaning. I think they're still racist themselves. I can't say anything like that at school. People will jump me for sure. Maybe I'm being paranoid and I keep on thinking if I offend them, they would take violent actions against someone who speaks out like me. Sigh I don't know anymore.
First of all, I'm not black. I'm a white upper middle class woman with a degree, a child, and a military husband. Don't make assumptions. Secondly you're right candidates do often skip debates, but the fact that four major players of the republican party skipped this one doesn't phase you? It phased the other candidates! Thirdly I didn't scream discrimination, I'm simply saying they need to pay better attention to what they're doing. You obviously didn't read what I said.
Sounds a little racist, honestly. Everyone knows that politicians are cut-throat, even if it's their own party, especially when it comes to the Presidential elections. Of course they're going to blow it out of proportion.
Did anyone ever stop to think that, yes, this may have been a planned event, but they had other events planned elsewhere before this one was brought to them? Generally people that are planning these things take the event that was scheduled first over one that was brought to their attention after the fact.

Why don't you contact the candidates and let them know how you feel? It's sad, but the majority is usually the dictator of how minority groups are treated.
t-time is right, minorities tend to vote democrat, no matter how good of a candidate the republican running is. should they have just chosen not so show up, no, bad choice.

It seems like in many places our country is going backwards in civilization and retreating to the thought that black people are "inferior". It makes me angry that even though minorities might not usually be republican voters they aren't even thought of by many of the candidates. Especially with the Jena 6 case, our candidates should be addressing that problem head on with proactive force against racism. It's always good to see that people are trying to raise awareness about issues that need to be addressed, and I'm really glad that you took that initiative, because even though only a few more people may be informed, it's better than none.

the Republican party (as a whole, there are a few exceptions) usually does not try to appeal to black voters or they already know the the black vote goes to the Democrats or something. I think expecially in this election they are probably assuming that all blacks are gonna vote for Obama or they might go with Hillary. The minority racial groups that a few republicans think about is the Asian Americans and the Hispanics. It also does not help because republicans or conservatives don't support many social causes and policies that would help the minorities such as race minorities or the poor, in general.
also don't get defensive/offended---it is not like i don't know anything because, hey, i live in PA where the state is only won by the democrats because of the cities in PA such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and majority of people who live in the cities (except for downtown areas in Philly) are a minority (blacks, asians and hispanics)
In any case, this is my own personal observation and opinion

Yep. republicans suck. Democrats do too. That is why you should study both sides and as many parties as best as possible and choose the best candidate. Just don't vote for Huckabee. He's just a crackpot.
"I am a Stephens Woman."
Yes the candidates should have been there but at the same time, it is their choice not to be.
It's not like they were not goint due to the black population, they needed to be somewhere else.
Being in politics is mainly about decision making, and they made one.
And like noted earlier, they know they are not going to be getting alot of support from the black community, due to Obama, AND they doo usually vote more democrat.
They are doing 'smart' campgiening and going where the money is. That's basic knowlegde right there.
I think you're reading way to much into this and making a ignorant statement. They missed because they don't have to be at every debate, and the things you said they could discuss at this one, is what they discuss at every other debate.
This isn't about race in the least. Why must people constantly play the race card? Makes them look like fools.
come on, it's just something that is very apparent...and I guess maybe you don't see it this way BUT it is quite truthfully a fact

I see that, but I also see republicans who do try hard, not getting the black vote.
I understand what you mean, but that doesn't mean that people need to start playing the race card.

I WISH I HAD TIME TO WRITE ALL THE THINGS I WANT TO SAY. IT AMAZES ME EVERYTIME SOMEONE (USUALLY A PERSON THAT IS NOT OF ETHNIC DESCENT), USES THE WORD "IGNORANT" TO DESCRIBE THE OPINION OF SOMEONE (USUALLY A PERSON OF ETHNIC DESCENT), WHENEVER THEY SPEAK OF RACE OR RACISM.
I BELIEVE THAT IGNORANCE BEGINS WHEN, WE ARE NOT OPEN MINDED ENOUGH TO APPRECIATE AND RESPECT THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS. IGNORACE CONTINUES WHEN WE ALLLOW OURSELVES TO BE ARROGANT ENOUGH TO BECOME JUDGEMENTAL. SO PLEASE PEOPLE...LET'S THINK BEFORE WE USE THIS VERY DEGARDING AND INSULTING WORD!! THANX!
P.S. I TYPE IN "CAPS", BECAUS I SPEAK WITH PASSION.....AND I'VE TRIED HOLDING MY TONGUE, BUT THAT HURTS TOO MUCH!!
Just because it is said that minorities vote one way or the other doesn't mean that a certain party should blow them off. Maybe they did have another function to go to or an appearance to make, but I guess they need to take the time to change people's views by making appearances in areas where they have less votes.
