Walmart is bad for America. It is driving American businesses out of business because they import all their things from foreign countries where they can get cheap labor. It finally caught up to them when China was shipping toys with lead poison.
So when a Wlamart open up somewhere, it drives local businesses out of business due to their low prices. Im not complaing about low prices- im all for that, BUT when it means that we are losing job in America when a Walmart opens, thats bad. It is nice that jobs are opening up in foreign countries, but it's not so nice that those jobs are also underpaid and in bad working conditions. The unemplyment rate is high enough and it is only growing. They under pay and expliot their workers. The average hourly worker makes $18,000 a year, when, in 2002, Walmart claimed $6.6 million in profit. A little excessive dont you think? One well kown company Walmart drove out of business is Rubermaid. They are such a big company, you might be wondering how that would be possible. Walmart is a huge organization, and since a lot of other companies that might sell Rubermaid were driven out of business, Rubermaid is forced to keep most of their products- thus most of their profit- in Walmart. And Wlamart can decide what they are going to charge for the Rubermaid products, so when they charge too much (like when Ribermaid is not doing something Walmart likes), people don't buy them. Rubermaid is not the only company that this has happened to. We can't let this keep happening. There are Walmarts everywhere, so they are very conveinient. But lets just say, as a very extreme circumstance, that Walmart is the only place you can buy storage containers. Then they can charge as much as they want because they are the only retailers of that, and everybody needs at least one storage container- they are a necessity.

for the country (as a whole or the people)...I can't help but say that they are just milking everything for its worth---this is a capitalist economy and you just have to use everything and anything--to make money
Walmart's making the rules, breaking a few rules but they are just giving such good bargains that the general public who does not know of its "evils" will not say anything...
I was going to say that unemployment is supposedly very low right now (like about four percent) and that it is considered almost nonexistent BUT that's looking at it using economic principles
Walmart really does need to change---I am against them not only because it hurts American people but also because they are abusing/using foreign factories/workers and paying them almost nothing

but the problem is with the U.S. Government not enforcing out Tariff system. Tariffs are designed to keep Company like Walmart from doing exactly what they are doing which is undermining American prices with cheap labor They need to raise the import tariffs to ensure that they can not be sold for less than American products.
Then they just move their business to Central and South America, where NAFTA is in place and tariffs can't be charged.
That said, I feel that Walmart is a mixed blessing. I've seen it save small communities because of the amount of taxes it contributes and jobs it provides (especially to the teenagers of the area). It also brings in other large businesses, such as Aldi, Best Buy, Home Depot, and so on, further increasing the area's income from taxes and providing even more jobs.
On the other hand, though, it's killing many of the little stores and shops that are around. It doesn't always happen that way (I know of a city that's basically divided into two parts - big retail shopping strips and little, small-town style shops, both of which are thriving), but it generally does.

I (mockingly) forget... who was it that brought about NAFTA?
as for Ma and Pa shops that are closed down by the evil walmart, what do they expect? If a giant retailer moves into town, selling the same stuff you do, but for alot less, you have to adapt or die.
many choose to die. Those that thrive are ones that find a niche market.
We have the same affect with Home Depot... I still go to Ace hardware because there are things there that Home Depot doesn't carry (Too specialized).
The power of the free market is that you can CHOOSE what to do. If you make a wise decision, you do well.
Even if it was "our idea," it still involves a number of other countries and would require their approval to change the policies.
Specializing isn't always a surfire way to stay alive, especially when you're competing with what is known as a diversified conglomerate (a company that offers several different kinds of goods and/or services). Also, being a generalized company doesn't always mean they'll carry everything you'll need. It may actually be better to say that Ace is more specialized than Home Depot because Home Depot carries a large variety of things to do a large variety of tasks that range from building a structure to interior decorating. Granted, it all revolves around home improvement, but you're not necessarily going to find a particular plant that you would find in a nursery (a specialized retailer of a given home improvement section), or a specific brand/color of paint or other paint supplies that you would find at Sherwin-Williams.
And yes, a free market economy means you do get to choose what to buy and sell. Unfortunately, a lot of companies take that a little too far and try to buy and sell everything. Technically, monopolies are illegal, though I've never seen it enforced by the government.

Most of the time, when you hear how bad WalMart is, you hear how it hurts the little comanies. I have never thought about how it can hurt the large companies that it buys from such as Rubermaid. This is where the most damage occurs. When a corporation is as large as WalMart, they make the rules.
Once a Super WalMart comes to town, it drives other stores out, and soon a consumer's only choice is WalMart, or drive to the next closest thing. Plenty of people who are against WalMart, (includint me) shop there because there isn't much other choice, as well as the convienece and prices.
On the other hand, the United States is a Capitolistic country. If other companies, both large and small, could learn to adapt, they could thrive. Instead, they refuse to change and complain when they are put out of business.

Many who are against walmart are in one of two camps:
1.) Labor Unions. Labor Unions miss out on the HUGE income they could get if they could force Walmart to join the union. However, every time it goes up for a vote, it is shot down by the employees (and no, Walmart doesn't know which employees voted for the union unless the employees say so). Much of the anti-Walmart force is because the labor unions have an attitude of "Join the Union or we shut you down." Remember commercials on television detailing how horrible Walmart was, especially since they don't pay any benefits to employees? Those were ads that were full of half-truths, and they were put out by the Labor Unions.
2.) Socialists/Communists. These people think that unless they are the rich ones, it is a crime to be rich. If someone succeeds, their wealth should be taken away and redistributed as the socialists/communists see fit. While this sounds all nice and fuzzy in theory, in practice it always leads to a small group of people in power who get all of the wealth, and a LARGE mass of the rest of us, waiting in line for hours to get some moldy bread and rancid meat. They don't like to see capitalism succeed, as they can't control the money when people are independent.
