There Will Be Blood: Review

So my housemates and I went to one of the cheap theatres to see "There Will Be Blood" last night...and I have to say, it was probably one of the best movies I've seen in my life...on my top ten list now for sure. A stunningly accurate protrayal of human greed; Daniel Day-Lewis plays an oilman at the turn of the century, a man from a poor background, obsessed with becoming wealthy and leaving his impoverished background behind him. At first, you sympathise with him; or at least I did...most of us are either poor or middle class and can understand the drive to make some money and live at least comfortably. But as the movie wears on, and his obsession makes him more interested in owning all the Coyote Hills area of California and getting all the oil from under the ground there. One memoriable scene that says it all, his when Day-Lewis' characture is "quail hunting" (really, they are scouting out oil,) with his nine or ten yr old son and the son looks at the father and asks what kind of money they are going to pay goat farmers for their land.
"Well, we aren't paying oil prices..." Day-Lewis responds, "we are gonna pay them quail prices..." The son looks a little puzzled, but as the movie progresses, he understands more and more clearly that his father will stop at nothing to feed his oil greed; even to the point where he gets ignored right after he has a serious accident so that his father can take care of a siduation happening with one of his oil wells. This scene especially really hit home for me; I have a few family members who it seems have sort of overlooked their children's growing-up years in order to work extreme hours and make as much money as possible.
Anyway, the evening ended with a great discussion about money and greed with my housemates and I; I think it is a very appiciable movie to many of the things happening in the world at the moment (need I say more?)

Love ya,

It looked ok to me when I saw previews, but I have been trying to convert to comedy type movies since my life is fully of drama and death. But it sounds worth watching. it sounds like it has good points in the movie. I am glad you shared this with everyone. I have reviewed a few movies in blogs and it doesn't seem to go to well with everyone lol. Good points though about the movie.

My husband found a list of the best worst movie bad guys. Daniel Day-Lewis' character is indeed one of them. I was amazed by the rather accurate representation of the more spiritual side of the movie. Sheer evil is laced throughout the movie and no one is able to get through to the greedy businessman.

I was intrigued by Eli's character. The hypocritical preacher who had his own greedy tendencies. We need to understand that Christians are not perfect and struggle with the same weaknesses as anyone else.

However, I was impressed by the elderly man who got the oilman to come to Church. Even though the preacher was messed up and the oilman (I don't remember his name) probably wasn't sincere, his supposed baptism is a powerful symbolic scene.

Ah, such a great movie...
