If you like the TV series Sex and the City, you’ll love this book. If Looks Could Kill by Kate White was a great murder mystery. Bailey Wiggins is a journalist for a magazine called Gloss in New York. Bailey is good friends with Cat Jones, who is the editor of Gloss. Bailey is the main character, and the story comes from her point of view. Cat is a mother of one who has a nanny living in the extension of her home, somewhat like an apartment. When the nanny is mysteriously poisoned on the night Cat hosts a party for the former editor of Gloss, Bailey becomes sort of a private investigator for Cat.
Bailey and Cat’s friendship is good, but also has the boss and Miss Cat is superior kind of edge. Bailey investigates all the suspects which include: all of the nanny’s friends and previous bosses, Cat’s co-workers, friends, and attendees of the hosted party, and anyone with a motive.
The story has a surprising twist when Cat is suspected to be the intended victim. A crazy thought runs wild threw everyone involved that editors of women’s magazine’s become intended victims of poison also.
Bailey’s love life comes into play when she’s working on the case. She has to stop by her, “booty-call” lover’s apartment when it rains after Bailey has left Cat’s house. She also gets involved with a man she originally contacted about a piece she was writing. She is hurt by previous men, but is interested none the less.
If Looks Could Kill also has not only romance, but action involved. Two attempts were made on Bailey’s life throughout the book, one which hospitalized her and the other that involved the police. She was attacked while making an investigation in another town. She stayed at her neighbor’s country home, alone, and was assaulted by an unknown person. She was injured, but only enough to call the police, and her being deadly allergic to peanuts put her in the hospital.
The greatness of this book comes from the many and various suspects and motives, even the theory that the intended victim was not the nanny. Bailey investigated other editors of the magazine, her co-workers, Cat and her husband, the attendees of the party hosted the night before the nanny’s death, and even questioned other’s outside of the suspect circle for help and advice.
In conclusion, If Looks Could Kill is a very mysterious, love involved, and limited action book. But don’t you just want to know? Did Cat kill her nanny, or was it her husband? Could someone really have a grudge against editors of women’s magazines, or was Cat the one who was really supposed to be killed? Well you’ll have to find out for yourself, trust me on this one, it’s a good book, and you’ll never figure out the truth until the end of the book.
