My mother came to America in the 1980s from Puerto Rico, she never expected to stay and meet her future husband. My aunt Gladys came here with a group of nurses and invited my mother to come with her to Louisiana. She knew no English, and had no idea what was waiting for her across the Gulf of Mexico.
The story of how my mother and father met is a pretty funny story. Since my mother knew no English she decided the best way to learn would be to take a English class. She signed up for night classes at Delgado, which she took at John Ehert High School. My dad at the same time had was not going to college and had a steady job. His mother encouraged him to get some sort of degree, and do some kind of further studies. He followed her advice being the mama’s boy that he is. Since, he enjoyed English and was actually very talented in the subject; he decided to take a English course at Delgado. This is the same class that my mother signed up for. My mother however did not realize that the English course was not to teach you how to speak English but was a grammar class for people that already fluently spoke English. They met and the rest is history.
Thanks to my pushy grandmother, and my mother’s lack of knowledge three beautiful kids were made. It’s amazing how life just works itself out like that. If my mother had never taken that class accidentally, and my father had never listened to his mother who knows where we’d be today.

Sometimes I wonder the same thing about my family because my grandparents came here sometime in the 1930s from Lithuania.
