My Urban Studies class was recently given the assignment of coming up with solutions to several problems the New York City Public Schools system currently faces. Obviously, there is no huge vat of money lying around anywhere, so we also had to factor in how we planned to pay for it. I figured posting it might get me some additionally idea(r)s. So without further ado................................
Part Five: Overcrowding
There is a theory in math that says certain things will always increase. This theory includes population. The general definition of a city is a place of business and commerce with a lot of people in a little space. New York City is the epitome of this. So, with everything else being ridiculously crowded, it stands to reason that the school system is bursting with kids.
What should we do with these young’ins? We decided that certain things should not be used, such as massive sterilization and the revoke of funding for students with special needs. Although fixing a problem usually requires thinking in terms of finance, one should never forget that we are dealing with people and must be humane above everything.
Our idea is twofold. First, we would create several more vocational schools which train in specified areas (i.e. Cosmetology, auto mechanics, food industry, etc.) It’s a fact that not everyone who goes through the NYC public school system can or will go to college. And that is with good reason. If you plan to work as a tradesperson, there is no reason to be educated in the liberal arts when it does not apply to how you earn your keep. These additional schools will be costly at first, but we hope that certain trade unions will pitch in and help with funding (cough cough teamsters.) Additionally, the flat tax will provide more effective funding than the property tax does.
The second half is a cultural exchange program with students in different areas of New York State. While this does require NYC to take in students from other counties, proportionally more students will be exported than imported. This will also give students a chance to understand life in rural or suburban areas, and vice versa.
Just a thought
Hope you enjoyed the theorizing, pitch in with ideas of your own

You seem to have posted 5 posts today within a very short time frame. While this kind of behavior is often seen in bloggers who are plagiarizing, using previous work, or just trying to cheat, it is not illegal. Many users may now skip your posts all together. This is bad if you're trying to win the contest! So let's not do it anymore!
