Are DVR / TiVos really good things to have?

This morning as I got prepared to do my normal juggling routine of handling work, school, and extracurriculars like Phi Beta Lambda, etc. I started my To Do list, a tool I have found to be essential in my constant day to day accomplishments, and noted to myself that I needed to watch my backlog of DVR’d programs.  When first introduced to me, I thought the concept of being able to record a program to watch later and not need to buy big bulky VCR tapes was ingenious. I now, however, question whether this instrument helps me or adds to my burdens.  I also realized I never watch TV during the week – except for maybe having CNN playing in the background while I’m getting dressed or making dinner.  Essentially, all of the programs scheduled for recording, come on either Saturday or Sunday.  Programs like C-Span’s Americas & the Courts, Cartoon Network’s Boondocks, and Meet the Press.  Right now, there are two recorded exceptions, my Super Bowl the State of the Union address, and the Alito confirmation hearings (can you believe I still haven’t watched them – I only have two). My DVR is 46% full right now – meaning I have over ten hours of TV programs I need to watch. This realization is cause enough for me to question whether DVRs / TiVos are good for you.  So the question I’m putting out here is - Is your DVR / TiVo helpful or harmful to you?  Also, how far behind are you in watching your programs?

I believe that in todays society tivos are an important thing to invest in. If like most americans we juggle a life full from morning till night and that one news caption or show that we had to see was scheduled at a time that wasnt available for one to watch then yes it is needed.

I have windows media center, do i get tivo on my laptop. It has helped me a lot, as I get to watch everything on the weekend.

I love the DVR. It saves me so much time; I can watch a one hour show in 45 minutes. I have time to do things like research on the internet for posts or go play some soccer, since I know I can watch The Daily Show tomorrow morning, or later in the night.

It gives you a degree of freedom.
