Students seem to have to fit into this social norm just to be counted in this school. Most teachers recognize school athletics or theater focused groups. But what happens to those students who are in academic teams? What have they ever gotten credit for? In my school as probably most others, the sports teams that actually bring in crowds are the central focus of everything. Basketball, football, soccer, and cheerleading reign supreme. And by association, I guess the dance team fits in. But honestly, even though those are not the only sports that do well, they are the only ones with en emphasis. What happened to the track team, or gymnastics, lacrosse, tennis, swim team, volleyball etc.? They get mentioned occasionally. Big deal. There are rallies set asides for those teams in state championships. Boys gymnastics are state champs 5 years in a row...what did they get you may ask? Nothing. A quick little congrats on the announments. What is the point of it? The school administration wishes to focus on the kids in those sports. Oh of course it is the preppy and popular kids. Everything is devoted to them. What respect goes to the kids in academic teams? Yes there are academic teams. And usually these teams have better track records than some sports teams. But do they get any real prestige for it? No, they are overlooked for the maybe not as dominating sports teams. Social classes like this in schools, carry on later in life. But what group is more likely to not be as happy later on in life? Those same all around athletes. A sports injury, or not making a team later on in college or trying to go pro, all causes these people to not be as happy with themselves as they were in highschool. Maybe the administration should not be allowing for this athletic favoritism. Maybe then these star kids will be better on in life. Or at least give those in academic teams some respect here.

some people dont even consider gymnastics as a sport and i think that is unfair. of course its a sport, even more than football and baseball maybe.

My school is the exact same way. It's so stupid. It sucks when you work hard and acheive something but get no recognition for it while others who dont acheive things get recognition all the time.
