Absent Perents

Ok, so I found out the other day that at my school there is this new clas that all freshman are required to take called "connections" and in the class, they teach morals. I think that's rediculous. That society has gotten to the point where parents are so absent in their children's lifes that they leave it up to the school to teach their kids morals.

I mean, parents send there children to school expecting that they dont have to teach them anything else, they taught them how to talk and walk, their job is done, the rest is up to the school. This leaves the school with students who don't know how to respect others, don't know disipline, or morals, for goodness sakes. I mean, we already have required classes to teach students how to talk to each other. What happened to the days when school's purpose was to teach students academic skills and home was a place to teach children life skills. With the school having to teach both, its no wonder you can pretty much graduate high school without ever learning how to read. They're relieved you learned how to follow directions.

I agree, but you must keep in mind that not all homes are happy ones.

We do live in a time where people are poppin' out kids left and right and sadly, those kids aren't taken care of.

It is sad that we need classes like that to teach us how to be adults, but some kids just aren't getting those lessons anywhere else.

If we left it up to parents, more unfortunate kids in unfortunate situations would follow in their parents unfortunate footsteps (even more than do now, if you can believe that).

Yes it is wrong that parents are no longer making as much of an effort to teach their children morals as they used to. Many tims though the homes that kids are comming from are not good ones. Parents are not always what they seem and it may be a good thing in the long run that the school is teaching kids morals instead of parents who do not have good morals teaching their kids them.

unfortunately, I agree that the homes that kids come from are not good enough, that's why schools are left to teach kids the things they should be learning at home.

if schools could just teach students academics and they could trust their parents to teach the rest(as it should be), then they would be able to challenge kids without drowning them. I am an average student. I'm not super smart, but I'm also not stupid, and in the public school system, that leaves me on the middle ground, I have two choices, 1) to take a class where the teacher might spend as much time writng referals as actually teaching, (in other words a class I could sleep through and still pass)[regular Ed] or, 2) taking a class where I would have to struggle quite a bit and only get a C[AP].

there is no middle ground because we have to accomidate for all the students with absent parents.

I think you should know that I am not saying the schools shouldn't offer this class, or even that they shouldn't require it, I'm just saying that they shouldn't have to, the flaw isn't in the school system(well, at least not THIS flaw), its in society, its in the home lives.

I agree. Schools are trying to make up for what the students are lacking in their home life. If schools didn't do it, who would?

I agree, the US government has had to lower the expectations of graduating student. What was required a couple years back isn't any more. We're just gonna keep getting dumber and dumber, then they're going to ask them selves "what did we do???", but by then its gonna be too late

Expectations aren't necesarily higher or lower, but different. It used to be that students were expected to memorize the preamble to the constitution, but they didn't need advanced chemistry.

Like what you've read? Well, then here's more:

Ha! I didn't need either.

Fortunately, I had the capacity to learn things on my own without them being required. I can't say the same for those in my graduating class :/
