Anyone who cares about themselves or their families should check out www.stepitup07.org. It is a site that is rallying for Congress to step it up and reduce carbon by 80% by 2050. We are in the begingings of a crisis on this planet that will affect everyone no matter how much money you have or how healthy you are. In the coming years, China and India will become wealthier and begin using resources at a rate equal to or higher than the way the U.S. does. China, in 2031, 24 years from now (in other words, very soon), will use 99 million barrels of oil a day, 15 million more than the entire world uses today. (Mother Jones Magazine,March/April 2007 "Reversal of Fortune", By Bill McKibben) Thats just China. We already consume more than our share of every resource, and those people in China want to live the luxurious life that we do and will feel entitled to it. How will this effect global affairs and the global economy? With populations far greater than ours, the resources of our planet will not sustain the demand. I picture a pack wolves fighting over the same scrap of meat and it doesn't look pretty. It is crucial that we immediately begin finding new ways of doing just about everything in our daily lives and in our economy in order to reduce our consumption and increase our sustainability and renewable resources. Oil is an old way of thinking, just forget about it because sooner than you think there won't be any of it left. Imagine a world in which fossil fuels do not exist, then look for a way to power our world. If we do this (and we can, its just a matter of effort) we will be in a good position as a nation to be prosperous in the new world order.
If you think this won't affect you, you're grossly incorrect. This will affect everyone. It will be in your lifetime. This crisis is not about saving some polar bears or some trees. It is about saving ourselves and choosing either a disastrous future that I don't even want to imagine or a prosperous and happy future for everyone on this very small planet of ours. Its a choice we need to make now, TODAY.
disaster or prosperity? You choose.

I have done a little research on this and by the time we have children or grandchildren the oil will be running out and chaos will not be pretty.

Many in this world, especially in this country, believe that everything will always turn out fine. "Someone else will take care of it!!" It is just this type of attitude that is destroying us, in reference to global warming. The attitude that this is someone else's problem to handle, that it isn't as bad as people are saying, or that it wont affect me is resulting in world-wide passivity. The lack of responsiveness will prove to be something that we will never be able to justify, and future generations will never be able to comprehend.
Here's to all who still believe and hope we can truly make a difference in what has become an insanely hypocritical nation!
Yes thank you. This is so much more than an environmental issue, also. This is about economy of resources and how are we going to deal with it when our rampant consumption has fierce competition from Aisa and other places. Tell all the people you can please, this is more important than anything. Peace, Ben Dayton
