Bizzarre Scholarships Worth Trying

Everyone always hears about the most brilliant students getting full rides to their colleges of choice when the “student feature” news casts and stories are published. These stories are about people who excel at nearly everything, who donate the majority of their free time to charity, and what is left of it is given to help save the whales while simultaneously practicing for their All-Star position on their sports team. What few seconds are left in their day is spent doing their Advanced Placement Calculus homework (which is easily done in twenty minutes time).

Stories like these, which focus their attention on the best of the best, tend to give the “average” student the idea that by occasionally blowing off homework or getting a low score on a test are inevitably doomed and will not get into a good college, let alone qualify for any sort of financial aid for life after high school.

Those who are not in the top ten of their class, or are not the best player on the basketball team, have no fear. There is always hope. After a search of Internet sites, magazine articles, and files shows that there are scholarships available for just about anyone interested in anything.

Consider a faulty basketball player, Tallman McTall: he has all of the physical qualities to be the best- but is just a little clumsy and careless with his free throws. However, because he reaches the height of 6’2 he automatically qualifies for the Tall Clubs International Scholarship. His sister, Tallina McTall is also eligible because she is 5’10. All they have to do is write an essay on what being tall means to them, send it in, and they might possibly receive $1.000 for being the school’s giraffe-duo. Visit www.tall.org for more information.

Belle Suite is vertically challenged, but she has an outstanding taste in fashion. She makes her own clothes, and designs dresses on the sides of her science notes during school. Sure, some people look at her and think, “freak” with some of the things she chooses to wear, but she likes to think of herself as unique and not “weird.”
Besides, all of those fad followers can’t win this scholarship for out-of-the-box thinking worth $2,000. Why? Well, would they, unlike Belle, be willing to make a prom dress out of duct tape? Don’t feel left out boys, Belle needs a man in a duct tape tux to court her to the dance! If this has you interested, visit www.ducktapeclub.com.

Victoria Terces is too-stylish to sport a duct tape gown to her enchanted evening, (it’s more to the fact that she doesn’t want to over heat in the sticky material). She would rather sit at home and bask in the scents of her favorite bubble bath.
Before rubbing on her night time calcium lotion, she sits down to write a few short essay answers for Calgon’s bath and body products scholarships. One question she answered was as simple as “Calgon’s perfume is sweet but succulent. Tell us how perfume brings you and your friends closer together.”

According to www.takemeaway.com, the company hopes that by offering this scholarship, girls all around will feel inspired to reach out and become better individuals. Aspiring girls like Victoria have won up to $5,000 to their school of choice. “Calgon, take me away… to college!”

Albert Lepi couldn’t believe that finding scholarships to fit interests was just as easy as pie! Literally, he found a scholarship available for making the best recipe for apple pie that could very well land him up to $25,000 towards a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts. To inquire, give the officials in the Culinary Institute of America’s All American Apply Pie Recipe Contest a call at 1-800-CULINARY.

So, go ahead. Blow off tonight’s English homework. Skip hockey practice to get ice cream with that cute girl or boy. Don’t stress too much over scholarships and grants and financial aid. Do be responsible and thoughtful about it, but remember that everyone has a special gift. Like being able to speak Klingon (yeah, there is a scholarship for that too). Instead of surfing the web for essay references (aka: video games), pull up google and type in “unusual scholarships.” One would be surprised how money they can come into for blowing a duck call.

I've heard about the duct tape one! I wish I'd found a good scholarship last year. But instead, everything I applied to didn't work out.

Just a little tip: Space out your paragraphs. It will make your blog easier to read.

Lol, yea I heard about the duct tape one as well.

But that's just how it is, the world is biased. The average student is just another average student.

Scholarships to try for is the oploftbed.com one. It is essay, but the questions are fun and there is no concern for GPA or leadership abilities. Just make the judges laugh the hardest.

Now I have to go so I can search for "unusual scholarships"

Thank you!!

When I first was applying for scholarships in 2003 you wouldn't believe how much more there was out there. Thousands were open to me, now there is so little. I can't honestly say if its that I am more focused on Graduate School scholarships or just that times have gotten a lot harder. My grades have only gotten better and I have only gotten poorer so I should be able to qualify for more. I encourage the community to jump on them (scholarship opportunities) now, by the time your seniors in college I shiver to think what little might be out there.

I think it's probably because you're in graduate school. There are fewer scholarships for grad students because there are much fewer grad students than four-year students.
