Service clubs are an interesting idea. You pay about twenty dollars and you give thirty six hours back to your community. Does anyone else think that this is a cult?
"I pledge, on my honor,
to uphold the Objects of Service Club;
to build my home, school and community;
to serve my nation and God;
and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions."
That's quite a promise they're making. I know that logging hours really just depends upon where your club is, but do you think these clubs are really making a difference? They go and turn pumpkins at a random church, they throw candy at little children on islands, and they have odd meeting times. (Monday's at 7:30) I'm wondering if this is just preparation of the hazing to be had during college. Like in Greek, "I fell down the stairs...with scissors" It seems like an unavoidable hazard of being in high school. I hope colleges appreciate the mindless stuff we do, because after standing near rotting pumpkins for hours on end I'm wonder if I'm doing something worthwhile. Do you think that service clubs help the community and help build character?

It depends on what the community service is. There are many ways to be involved that benefit both the volunteer and the community. Then again, I haven't been forced to do any service since I started college, so I'm not sure what I was being prepared for. One thing I've noticed, is that I enjoy volunteering more than a paid job.
