Sports are not EVERYTHING

Tagged:  •

In today's society many parents emphasize their children's involvement in sports.  Sometimes I think the parents enjoy the sport more than the kids actually do.  More and more parents seem to be pushing thier children into sports at a young age.  Perhaps it is to get them in shape or to socialize them.  I'm not criticizing church league sports where they teach children basic skills.  Yet, I am criticizing the extemely competitive sports for young children.  At an older age I fully understand.  I just do not see why young children need to be forced into this extemely busy competive sport nature. Young children do not need to be travelling to sports competitons every weekend, and they should not have to be stressed by extreme practices.  I find it funny that the young children who do these competitive teams end up getting sick of thier sport before they even finish middle school.

I think parents are just trying to do what they think is best for kids- to socialize them and get them involved. I do however think that kids should never be forced to participate in sports, especially highly competitive ones. They shouldn't be learning that all that matters is winning. Sports should be a fun activity and if it's not fun for the kid then it should be abandoned.
