Brown girl in an almost all white school

OK so i recently moved to Or from Southern California and yes i was in total culture shock when i got here. All my life lived in a community where 99% of the population was Latino, then on a summer vacation to Oregon my parents decided to move here. I didn't actually realize how there weren't that many Latinos here until i walked into school. I was shocked there was no Latinos, as I walked down the hall I saw about 3 Latinos. I didn't know how to deal with this, then to make it all even more awkward when my peers would ask me what kind of music i listened to I told them "oh I listen to rock" they were even more shocked. They would say "oh really i never knew that Mexicans listened to rock". Back home all my friends listened to it!!! I don't really know if this is true or not but I have heard a lot of people say that Oregon in one of the most racists states in the Unites States, well I haven't had any racist experience just a lot of ignorant people. But yeah when you walk down the streets of my neighbor hood you do get a lot of questioning looks, people look at you as if you were about to rob a house or steal a car, but you learn to ignore these stars, even when you feel really out of place. Even though I have lived here for almost a year now I'm still trying to get used to it! well if you guys have any advice to help me out a little let me hear from you!!

I'd like to think that ignorance and racism were two separate things, but they seem more interconnected than ever in the high school situation.

rosygirl, in my high school there were primarily white, lower to middle class students. We had about...4 black students? And two of them were identical twins. There were probably just as many Latinos. So, from my clearly biased position I really feel for your position, even though I've never been the minority.

I think the best you can do is just be you. Don't change yourself to fit these people's stereotypes and don't get too frustrated with them. Show them who you are, and eventually those stereotypes should look silly to them.

Hey, I tried. You asked for advice, didn't you?
