It's Healthy to Be Vegetarian

Tagged:

Vegetarians have lower rates of heart disease and some forms of cancer than non-vegetarians.

Types:

Vegans or strict vegetarians exclude all animal products (e.g. meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, and other dairy products). Many vegans also do not eat honey.

Lactovegetarians exclude meat, poultry, fish, and eggs but include dairy products.

Lacto-ovovegetarians exclude meat, poultry, and fish but include dairy products and eggs. Most vegetarians in the US are lacto-ovovegetarians.

According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing:

  • Heart disease
  • Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

The China Health Project has shown that vegetarians can live 5-7 years longer than non-vegetarians.

Now even if you are not a vegetarian, these things can still be true for you if you don't each much meat like me.
Cutting your meat intake makes you healthier and I think that the overweight people here in the US should try to follow a more vegetarian diet.

I love meat and if it kills me so what at list I was happy when I lived as for fat people and limiting meat intake actually meat is mostly protean and they recommend that you eat more protean and less fat and carbohydrates when trying too loose weight. So in reality lean boiled meant is good to eat when loosing weight.

There are several other foods that contain protein besides meat.

well i think its kinda obvious that you would be healthy if you ate veggies all the time. but i think that ill stick to my meat. nothing against the vegans but thats something that requires alot of dedication and i just dont have that. but hey if thats what you do. more power to ya!

I eat a lot of meat. I actually find it hard to have a meal without meat. About other sources of proteins, there are the mushrooms and the soy, which represent some of the vegetables with most proteic concentration.

I was a Lacto-ovovegetarian up until about 2 years ago. Now i eat seafood but no meat. I just never liked it ever since i was a todler. Plus there is so much cholesterol and stuff in red meat, which makes it bad for you.

thats true. Vegetabale are beter for you them meat

You need a healthy balance of both. If you don't have meat, you're still leading yourself down a road to death, although not as quickly.

I dont agree. Nutrients from meat can also be found elsewhere, from healthier sources.

There are no nutrients unavailable from sources other than animals. The 6 groups of nutrients are water, carbs, fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. All of these can be easily obtained from other sources. Cholesterol is only available from animal sources, but it is not essential for life. vitB12 is commonly thought to be only available from animals, but bacteria are the only producers of B12. Therefore, it can be obtained by promoting synthesis via cloning, extracted, and distributed as a supplement. It's also unlikely to develop a B12 deficiency that isn't due to absorption because B12 is stored, excreted, and reabsorbed via enterohepatic circulation. In fact, it can take as long as 20 years for someone to become anemic due to b12 deficiency if he or she has efficient absorption. The thought that it is only available from animals is because it is most widely and conveniently available from animal sources. I have completed extensive studies in physiology, nutrition, and biochemistry and know that there are no essential nutrients that are only produced by animals. Furthermore, if this were true, all vegans and vegetarians would die. I've been vegetarian for quite a while, and I'm doing quite well (and quite healthy).

As forLubov_P "protean" girl, I'm wondering who the "they" that reccommends eating more protein and less fat for "loosing" weight. The best remedy for weight loss is a well-balanced diet and increased physical activity.

That was a very informative post. I never knew the different levels of vegetarianism. I have began to cut down on my meat intake and quite frankly I feel healthier. Like I have more energy. It's funny because I really haven't eaten any junk food in the past couple of weeks and decided to eat some potato chips today and they made me sick...like my body's like don't give me that crap again!

does not make one more prone to disease. Many of the diseases associated with "meat eaters" have MANY factors. It is VERY possible to eat meat on a regular basis without becoming unhealthy. Vegetarians and vegans, while their efforts are commendable, have no real advantage over those of us who choose to eat meat.

We, as humans, are animals. We have teeth designed for ripping meat, and we have teeth designed for breaking up plants. It is only natural that we should use both types. I do not believe that it is nature's course for humans to eat only meat or only not, for if it was, our entire digestive system would be suited for the one or the other. Plus, this is only one study, and there have been tons of others that say the exact opposite. Google it.

I guess I'm not your average vegetarian (lacto-ovo). I didn't decide to be a vegetarian. I was simply born a vegetarian. My grandmother convinced my mother to become a vegetarian, so she raised my sister and me as vegetarians from day 1.

I love being healthy. People are all the time telling me that they wish they could become a vegetarian. I guess for me, it is not a diet but a lifestyle.

Just as some people can't live without meat, I could not live with meat.

I'm a vegetarian for life and proud of it!
