I don't dream very often and not nearly as often as I used to. Besides this fact, I've always wondered if dreams are relevant to situations in life or just in our subconscious. This isn't a new question, nor do I have any new theories or ideas to this, but I just want to state what I think on the subject and hear what others's ideas on the topic are.
I think that relvance varies from dream to dream. I've had my share of off-the-wall dreams that, in my mind, can in no way relate to anything I've seen or thought about in the past few days or weeks. I do think that there are dreams that relate to what one sees throughout the day or thinks about during the day. For instance, I've had dreams about going to school and entering my English class without the paper due that day and my teacher yelled at me quite harshly for not turning it in on time. When I woke up, I made sure that I had my paper done and ready to go to school. Was this my body's way of subconsciously reminding me to bring my paper or just some random dream that coincidentally reminded me?
I've heard certain "professionals" on sleep that would say that each and every dream has a meaning and can help one in their life. I suppoose that this is possible, but how can a dream about my being chased around my house by a dinosaur be applied to my life?

I think I've read that you dream about what you think about when your falling asleep more frequently. Like with your paper dream, you were probably thinking about it when you were in bed. The concept of analyzing dreams is more of a pseudo-science, and not very reputable.
Yeah, I can see why I'd have that dream of the paper, but that reason doesn't carry on to other dreams. As I said, I dont' think I was thinking about dinosaurs chasing me around my house when I went to sleep that night, but then again, I don't really remember. I think you can only analyze dreams to an extent, it gets to a point where it's just theory.
I think that I tend to agree with more Freudian like theories...that dreams often do have some kind of connection to reality...not that if you like dream about unicorns or something then that means you think they are real...but there is some underlying meaning...like with the unicorn example maybe you are trying to live fantastically to avoid reality...something along those lines...I think it makes the most sense especially considering when you dream...unless you are sleep deprived it's not as soon as you fall asleep...so when your neurotransmitters start rapidly firing it makes more sense for them to hit on a fear or concern you have than just randomly settling on something you were thinking about...which unless it was somehow very significant wouldn't even be retained in your short term memory anymore (it can only hold up to 7 things at once for about 30 seconds)
as for your paper dream it could be as simple as having a fear of not having the paper done on time...or it could be complex like a fear of incompetence or inadequacy
I guess there's always the possibility of every dream having an underlying meaning. I just don't see how one could determine it. It might just be one of those subjects that just can't be tested and we can only speculate. Well, referring back to my paper dream, I had already finished my paper, and I always receive good grades in that class as well as other classes so I dont' think I would be having a feeling of incompetence or inadquacy as you propose, but then again, it truly is possible. The brain is such an amazing part of our body; it's just so complex, it astounds me.
yeah...but it doesn't have to be feeling incompetent at school...but yes it is one of those things that is mainly speculation.
and yes I agree about the human brain it is simply amazing
When we learned about dreams in psychology I found it fasinating. Each person has around 30-100 dreams a night. Most dreams only last around 30 seconds to 3 minutes. A person has dreams every night even if they don't remember dreaming. If a person didn't dream a study found that it could make a person very sick. I believe dreams are subconcious. I have had preminition dreams and they are not fun to have. I have always wondered if reality was a dream. I know this sounds strange but it was a weird question I have thought about. I found this blog interesting. I like reading other people's views.

Yeah, I've heard about the multiple dreams every night. I usually don't remember my dreams, at all. So I'm not sure if I'm not dreaming or if I just can't remember a single one of the 30-100 dreams I had, I tend to have a bad memory, but that bad?
I always remember at least one dream a night...there are some dreams I can remember in vivid detail that I had in like 5th grade...
they also say that the majority of the population doesn't dream in color...but I always remember my dreams in color...I do remember one in black and white where the only color was a red rose...
Yeah, I can remember a few dreams that I had years ago easily, but I just can't recall any now. Even ones that I've had in the past few weeks, I'll remember when I wake up then instantly forget after taking my shower in the morning. Some of my dreams are color, but most of my dreams wouldn't have much color even if they were reality. I had one dream where I was running around a mouse maze being chased by a giant mouse- not much color associated with mice and mazes to begin with, right?
that's b/c when you first wake up it's in your short term memory...it's not after your shower
yeah you're right that wouldn't have much color association
You only dream in Rem sleep. There is like 4 stages of sleep or something. REM sleep is the deepest. Maybe you are not getting deep enough sleep?

yep that's right...and if you don't get enough rem sleep you will skip the beginning stages and go straight into light rem...which is why sometimes it seems like you aren't quite asleep but are already dreaming
Certain things you think about and do throughout the day certainly do play a role in your dreams. Also though, certain objects in dreams can represent certain things...maybe the dinosaur is a large problem in your life your running from. being that it was in ur living room it could be something close to hom, or related to your inner circle. thats just if the dinosaur dream was actually true, if it was just an example..obviously that would hold no ground. lol
The best dreams however are those we can try to make come true. Please read my blog about MY dream that I am trying to make become a reality about the United States Public Service Academy, and give me your thoughts!
