Texas college bars students from posing for Playboy

Playboy is currently recruiting for their annual "Girls of the Big 12" spread.  Baylor University is threatening their female student with suspension for participation because it is against Christian values.

Baylor Vice President for Student Life Samuel W. Oliver sent an e-mail to women students this week warning that any who "associate" with Playboy would be subject to the university's disciplinary processes.

"Playboy is clearly antithetical to Baylor's mission and associating with the magazine would be a violation of the code of conduct," Oliver wrote in the e-mail. University officials said punishment could include suspension.

One woman, who professed no desire to pose for Playboy, said Baylor officials had "more important things to worry about" and wondered if male students would face similar punishment if they were seen reading an issue of Playboy featuring Baylor women.

What do you think of the controversy?  Personally, I wouldn't attend a university that held me to such standards as Christianity.  To be punished by your school for sinning??  Even churches don't do that!  I see no problem with reiterating the school's baptist message, but to threaten girls with suspension.  Plus, Baylor is a private school that costs around $25,000 yearly -- let the girls make some quick cash!

I agree. For one, a college shouldn't be able to do that. It's against our right to ... well ... basically do what we want (unless it's illegal, of course). It's a free country; let them do whatever they want. It's their body. If they want to pose nude, let them pose nude.

Agreed. Let people do what they want, there is no harm in taking pictures with their consent. Ler them do what they want. It is a free country pretty much.

Goodness! The conduct of Baylor University is what is reprehensible not the desire held by some of its female students to want to pose nude in Playboy. For the administration of this college to be able to dictate what their students can and cannot do is a complete travesty and antithesis to everything that this country - founded on the the ideals of freedom and individualism - stands for. I understand that this university is private and thereby not regulated by the State (since it should receive no funding from taxpayers), but I sincerely question how many students would have opted to attend Baylor if they would have known how severely their rights would be suspended. Most colleges are known for supplying an environment of free-thought, expression, and idea exchange; Baylor University is clearly not in the majority. What an absolute shame.

What about the males that can also pose for playboy? I think the principal is being more sexist than anything.

If a society is willing to give freedom for temporary security, they deserve neither.

Exactly, the idea of a naked female titilates him and that MUST be wrong. That's the whole Christian (especially Baptist) take on these things. Anything that could possibly excite you sexually is wrong because sex, except to reproduce, is wrong.

Wow, it must SUCK to be in a Christian school! Kind of like living in Taliban Afghanistan!

It is a private school with Christian values, there students should live by them

But is it Christian to judge? or force a person to live a certain way? or infringe on a persons' rights regardless of morality?

I would tell the college to shove it. They can't tell me what I can and cannot do outside of school. That's like a school telling me I MUST do my homework and finsih it between this hour and this hour or I will be subjected to a beating the next day. Hey, thats free publicity for the school too. Guy sees the pictures. "wow that girl is hot, I want to go there!"

How horrible. Girls at Maryland that I know in 2 sororities did "Girls of the ACC" 2 years ago. Their sororities kind of threw a shit fit but the school didn't care.

Yes, it is against Christian "ideals" to pose for playboy, but I don't see their churches not allowing them to attend services, or fining them, do you? And hey, I'm sure a lot of non-Christians go to Baylor as well, so why should they be subjected to living by Christian dogma? Perhaps they just really liked the campus or thought it was a good school and wanted the secular education...why do they have to live by Christian ideals as well?

So does this mean no girls in that school can strip for cash? Not that I'm all for it, but hey, girls do it. To help ease the tension of college costs. It happens.

I find it funny that a college education is supposed to enlighten and broaden your horizons, and Baylor is simply denying personal rights to its students. I think its appauling. Even if they did it and were suspended, a suit would definitely follow. I can guarantee the girls didn't sign a contract promising to avoid any "non christian" habits.

The girls are at a private christian school, they need to respect the ideals of the institution as well as how the school wishes to portray themselves to the public, I can't belive that the girls are getting upset about this one would think that they could easily assume that posing for playboy would get them in some sort of trouble

That's against their rights as American citizens. No college, or any establishment for that matter, should be able to hold such power.
