Fear Global Warming? Eat Vegetables!

"[. . .] an average animal-based American diet generates about 1.6 tons more carbon dioxide per person, per year, than an all plant-based diet with the same number of calories. And that, as it turns out, is about the same greenhouse gas difference between driving a Toyota Camry and a Chevrolet Suburban [. . .]"

Darn, if only this research had been available to me a few days ago, when I was still writing my paper about the negative impact of eating too much meat (a summary of my paper can be found here).

What do you think about this?  Will further research like this work to encourage you, personally, to eat a little less meat and more vegetables?

Well... I'm already a devout vegetarian, but I think that certain people would not give up their meat even if you threatened them with imprisonment and torture. However, that are still others that would definitely be persuaded to a diet that is lighter in meat.

I used to be a pescetarian, and I'm sad that I've had to reintroduce poultry into my diet. However, I'm going to college this fall, and I'll not be able to maintain a healthy diet as a pescetarian with their cafeteria options. It's sad, but true. My general point is that most meat eaters in America overdo it, and badly. They raise health concerns for themselves and environmental concerns for everyone else. If people, Americans especially, could just cut back on how much meat they consume, it would be better for everyone.
Oh well...

Already a vegetarian...true, many people don't understand what eating meat is beyond the taste.

Umm... no. Sorry. I just can't manage to live on veggies. I'd rather eat a steak and not drive a car. Or just consume less, in general, which I already do compared to most people: most of my spending goes to books and coffee.

That's not terrible. Most people consume an unhealthy and extreme amount of cow and pigmeat.

As long as you're aware and willing to take steps to improve your life and the environment, that's what matters.
