The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is going down the Texas border getting land inorder to errect a border wall. One resident, Elosia Tamez only has one question: why is her land being destroyed for this wall when a golf course and resort go untouched.
Homeland Security wants to put up an 18 foot steel and concrete wall through her land. It will cut through her backyard, and thus her home will have to be destroyed, but the wall will stop two miles away at the edge of River Bend Resort and golf course, and start up again on the otherside. This is a popular winter retreat in Texas.
69 miles north, Daniel Garza, faces a simliar situtation. He has a neighbor, billionaire Ray L. Hunt, who has political connections reaching as far as the White House. His land is going to be destroyed too, yet a field across the street will go untouched due to the political connections.
Mr. Hunt is one of the wealtheest oil and gas companies in the world. He is a close friend of the President, and recently donated over $30 in order to help build up Bush's Presidental Library. Back in 2001, Mr. Hunt was made a member of the Foreign Intellegence Advisory Board, this gave him the security clearance to access classified intelligence.
Many residents along the border were shocked to find out that the wall would go through their homes and communities. Most expected it to run along the banks of the Rio Grande, not north of the levees, sometimes as far north as a mile (in the case of Ms.Tamez). Last summer the residents were met by Border Patrol agents, they were then asked to sign waivers so that Homeland Security could survey their property; if they decline then Homeland Security filed condemnation suits.
There is definately a political and monetary underlingings behind this wall. It's not fair that the rich and connected don't have to loose out, while normal Americans loose their property in order for Homeland Security for all of us.
