College student threatened with suspension and expulsion for seeking help with his depression... VERY interesting

After experiencing the suicide of one of his close friends as a freshman... he pounded on the door right outside the room from which his friend jumped to his death... student Jordan Nott began experiencing signs of depression.  So he made the correct decision and sought help; there is virtually no circumstance in which it is correct to refuse help when battling with depression.  It is a serious medical problem and is evaluable and treatable as such.  Unfortunately, George Washington University doesn't approach situations like this in quite the same way.  Apparently, soon after checking into the hospital for treatment, Jordan was served with a notice that he was banned from campus and that he was facing suspension or expulsion.

And this story doesn't continue on to reveal a "happy" plot twist.  Nott was not allowed back onto campus, and his family members had to retrieve his personal posessions from his dorm room because he Jordan himself could have been charged with trespassing for returning to get them.  He eventually withdrew from the university to avoid having a suspension or expulsion on his record.

Now, he is suing the university.  Normally, I don't agree with lawsuits of any kind, but in this case I think that an exception can be made.  Rarely have I seen a series of actions taken by a group of individuals, these administrators and whoever else was responsible, that is as odd as this.

A person who is depressed and possibly suicidal is only a "danger to the community" if that community defines danger as "risking the popularity loss associated with the death of another student."  You see, there had been a number of suicides at this school recently, and their treatment of Jordan Nott suggests that the administrators were more concerned with their reputation than with a human life.

Furthermore, I am concerned with the fact that someone saw fit to inform administrators of Jordan's condition.  This means that an employee at the university in charge of mental health care (or simply someone else with access to the records) spread his information. This person devalued human life in the best interests of a school's reputation as well.

This seems to be a trend in higher education these days.  While I was under the impression that the only loss of focus was on the education of undergraduate students, who don't publish research and are therefore considered to be "useless" to many officials, there appears to have been a loss of focus on human life itself unless said life can be used to advance the school.

I sincerely hope that I am wrong; I hope that there is more to the story and that GWU had reasonable motivations behind their actions.  But for now, until more information is released in the news, I just hope that Jordan Nott continues feeling better.

Wow! That's pretty unbelievable, especially in today's time where depression is accepted as an illness that requires treatment. I hope he wins his lawsuit.

But it is worth noting that all schools don't react this way. I have a friend who self-medicated to deal with stress and anxiety. Her habit soon became addiction and she ultimately failed many of her classes one semester. She has since gone into rehab. But before she made the decision to clean up, she approached the deans of UT and asked for assistance and guidence. Since she had regularly seen a university therapists about her problem they have allowed for her failed semester to be withdrawn from her record. Of course this sets her back almost a full year (she started this semester before fully withdrawing and going to rehab) but it shows that not all university administrations frown upon mental disorders.

After hearing that story I hope George Washington gets drained.

They couldn't even be sympathetic? A student died and a friend is depressed, well it shows where some hearts are and where others have thier minds only on tuition money I guess.

This is heinous.

I see how much George Washington loves and cares about it's students.

That college is DEFINITELY crossed off of my "potential colleges" list.

It's horrible that George Washington cares more about its national reputation than about the health and well-being of their students. GO JORDAN!! GET IT ALL!!
