What defines you

Tagged:

The actions you take define you. That's always what's been drilled into my head and will stay there and simmer awhile. So, if you find $20 and don't turn it in, you're going straight to hell? Or if you don't vote it means you're lazy and don't care who runs America?

That last statement I somewhat agree with. I have heard so many people say "I will move if Hillary wins the election" or "McCain is too old to be a great president". And then I ask that ill-fated question, "So, who are you going to vote for?" "Oh, I don't plan on voting," is their response. These same people who are complaining about who the country is to be run under will not take an active stand? It's a load of bull. If my dad had his way, everyone that were eligable to vote and didn't would be paying 100% of their taxes. While my views are not as radical, I do think it is important to let your voice be heard. But, the whole taxes thing isn't the only thing that my parents and I disagree on.

"Well, it seems to me, McCain is the only sensible candidate." Both my mother and father would undoubtedly agree on this statement. Yet, I seem to be stuck on who will receive my vote later this year. While I like that McCain is moderate, I dislike what the Republican party stands for. They say that two out of three kids is whatever there parents are. Guess I broke the mold, right?

I absolutely hate how Republicans drill Pro Life on any one and every one. While I personally believe that I will never take an innocent life, I don't think it's anyone else's right to say that someone has to keep a child. I hate living in the Bible Belt where, if you say you're Pro Choice at Church, people pretty much smite you. Ugh!

The one thing that I completely disagree with both Republicans and Democrats on is gay marriage. Who the hell is the government to say who you can and cannot fall in love with? And I know it says that homosexuals are going to hell in the Bible, but that was written a really long time ago and the gay community has come to terms with it, WHY THE HELL CAN'T YOU?

Wow, I feel better...

First and foremost, please remember that this is an intellectual blog. I understand that everyone needs to vent, but please keep the swearing and common slang to a minimum.

As for your blog, I do agree with a lot of things you are saying. To start, you don't like that people stereotype simply because of religious views (ie- abortion, gay marriage, etc.). But while you're asking all of these other people to keep an open mind, do you think at the same time you could be stereotyping the same way that they are? Look at what you said about how all republicans are pro-life and are trying to push their views on everyone else? Not all republicans are pro-life. I am pro-choice and I am a republican. I also happen to know a couple democrats that are pro-life. The point is that people are going to have their opinions, and the most we can hope for is understanding of those opinions without judgement or condemnation.

Next and more importantly, I completely agree with you that people should not complain if they don't want to take part in the voting process. They are choosing to be lazy and uninformed. On top of that, I sincerely hope that the people who are voting stay informed and vote for the best all around candidate, rather than voting based upon one issue that they are concerned with or merely upon what the majority is doing.

I don't think saying hell a few times warrants a language reminder. In truth, some of the most well written blogs at ProgressiveU contain foul language. We certainly don't moderate for language, unless it is directed at someone else.

On another note, I tend to agree that people shouldn't complain if they do not vote. However, I would prefer that someone not vote than that someone go to the polls uninformed or without truly supporting the candidate they are voting for. Ignorance in action is just as bad as no action. If one is going to go to the polls, one needs to be informed, know where the candidate stands and actually feel as if they are choosing a candidate they can support. Anything else is just a waste.
