Good Looking Out Mr. Bin Laden: Your Country Thanks You.

Good things can be born out of gut-wrenchingly awful situations.

A good friend of mine died early this past November. He hit a tree on a stretch that has seen a minor car accident occur twice monthly for the past 9 years (before then there were only two houses on the 5 mile stretch). As a result of his death, the road has been widened and paved. they have also installed a sharp corner mirror that lets people see around the "dead man's turns." Since modifications of the road ended the last week of December, there has not been a single accident.

Out of his death many have been saved from serious injury.

On September 11, 2001 We saw thousands loose their life on the East Coast in attacks perpetrated by the Afghani terrorist group the Al-Qa'ida.

As a result of this attack, the United States joined by Canada, and Brittan entered Afghanistan with the hopes of destroying Al-Qa'ida and the militant Taliban's grip on the country.
There has actually been success in Afghanistan--unlike some unwarranted invasions which feel as if they may go on forever.

Osamma is still out there hiding in some hole in the desert sending out videos about how much he hates America (as if we didn't already know) However, his influence over the Afghani people is nearly non-existent.

Since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan has held it's first set of Democratic elections sing 1973. They've rewritten their constitution to establish themselves as an Islamic Republic which means their government now consists of the executive, legislative and judiciary branches. 28% of their congress consists of women (the constitution requires 25%). Their education systems are improving, and higher education is expanding. Increased interest in developing commerce in the country by outside business men is helping to foster economic growth.

This country has been making leaps and bounds yet we are not hearing about any of them! The media is so focused on the failing of the current administration that they are not letting the American people know, that sometimes these things work out for the better.

Unfortunately, through 2007 rural parts of Afghanistan have been seeing an increased instance of Taliban activity. My questions are: would you support a US troop surge in Afghanistan to help these people continue on the path that they have been for the last five or so years? Do you think our failings in Iraq have overshadowed our successes in Afghanistan to the point where increased troops is a near impossibility? Lastly, do you think that the media will start covering successes in Afghanistan as a part of it's love affair with the next administration?

p.s. Rate peoples posts, it makes you look cooler.

Erm, the Taliban did not, and has not ever acted in offense against the United States (or any foreign power for that matter). The Taliban's actions have been solely concentrated in gaining power over the failed state of Afghanistan.

As for the whole notion of an Islamic Republic: Iran is an Islamic Republic. Before the over throw of Saddam, Iraq was an Islamic Republic. Islamic Republics are not the most desireable form of government, and I guarantee that ten or twenty years down the road, whether or not the government installed in Afghanistan manages to actually get any power outside of the city of Kabul, that country will come back to bite us in the ass (just like training the Al-Qa'ida mujahadeen in '79 did to us off the coast of Yemen and subsequently on 9/11).

Oh c'mon Mike, you don't seriously think Afghanistan will do that?

Actually on second thought nevermind, scratch that. I'm taking you're also remembering our taking out of the Prime Minister of Iran which lead to the Shah, who made the people hate us because of his authoritarian rule, who then lead to the Islamic extremists we have in Iran today who hate us and want us wiped out.

Al-Qa'ida not Taliban...

"Jesus take the wheeeeel!"
"I'm not sure she really understands how it works..."

"wrong information always shown by the media, negative images is the main criteria, infecting the young minds faster than bacteria..."

i don't think the media will ever report things as they are. and while i can never agree with violence as means to solve problems i do believe war is most often times inevitable and i also think we should finish what we start.

The MSM will never report the news the way it is. Your non MSM media will but even then not always.

I like middle eastern media because they aren't bought out by the government (all the time). I'm particularly fond of Al-Jazeera (the english version).

But doesn't Al-Jazeera have a slant toward Islam?

I have nothing against their slant if there is one, I just like my media as unbiased as possible.

Not that I've really noticed. They seem just generally against most governments, although they do have a tendency to understate things like genocide.

Foreign media reporting on the US also has less fluff stories, often they have no celebrity news or human interest pieces. "Just the Facts"

"...She threw her hands up in the air
Jesus take the wheeeeel!"
"I'm not sure she really understands how Jesus works..."

I don't know that I'd go as far as to say "just the facts", but they certainly take no qualms with painting other governments in a less than perfect light.

Thank you for an interesting read and I'm glad to see there are still people who think clearly about these things. Awesome post and I think all Americans should read this.
