I work in a high school and it is amazing to hear how some of the students talk to each other. They have absolutely no idea how to communicate effectively. This is a huge problem. Lack of communication skills is a big factor of arguements, fights, and even murder. When students get angry, they attack. The first thing that comes to their mind is to fight. We all know fighting in high school isn't what it used to be. Now they have weapons. Even if they don't bring them to school, they follow through with thier plan off campus. Where are our children safe? It would work a lot better if they could sit down with each other and work out a solution instead of slugging it out during class or lunch or worse. Problem solving skills would make our schools a safer place for our children. It is heartbreaking to watch the news only to hear of students being gunned down or stabbed at school. These acts are usually done by some one who was constantly picked on or pushed aside. I would absolutely love for our curriculum to include communication skills in every class. It should be introduced in the elementary school so by the time the students reach high school they have mastered at least some good habits. They put writing as a priority and that is good too. However, our youth needs to know how to communicate and problem solve as well. These skills will help them throughtout their lives.

I totally agree. The way we, as high school students, talk is absolutely wrong. I always try to speak correctly and attempt to correct my friends; but if someone has spoken that way for years, he/she won't improve.
You are right. Old habits are hard to break. If we could get communication skills in the elementary school, that would be a great way to build better skills. By the time the kids get to high school, good habits are already instilled. However, don't be so fast to say someone won't change. People are changing everyday.
