You've all seen the commercials and there are all kinds of drugs out there that treat depression, like Zoloft. But I never hear anybody talking about it. How do you know if you are depressed, do you have to be diagnosed by a doctor? How come no one really knows when you're depressed? When you tell a friend you're depressed, they think, "oh, she's just not feeling well today" and "she'll get over it soon." How do you explain to people it's an illness and that you can't make it go away?

Most people don't, and/or can't, explain, and that's the really sad part. Depression isolates you from the world; getting up the courage, or the energy, or the resolve, to go to the doctor and get a prescription is hard enough--how are they supposed to explain their condition to everyone else? That's why, just like for all kinds of other people, advocates are needed, to educate others about depression so they can help those who have it, and understand it's not just like a bad--not something you can vanish over night.

Um, it's kind of hard to explain.
I mean, it's a bad feeling, but it goes beyond that. It's just like feeling horrible and hopeless and worthless and totally unimportant and guilty.
If you are thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, you should really talk to someone though. It's really important.
I don't know how to explain to people. It's so touchy and there is such a stigma attached to any kind of mental illness. I mean, I didn't tell anyone I was depressed for 4 years, because I didn't want them to think I was weak or hurting. It is so hard. I'm on medication now, but the effects of those years of depression will follow me around for the rest of my life.
There are some websites if you search "depression," like professional ones. But only a doctor can diagnose you with depression. You should seriously talk to someone if you are feeling bad though. Hey you could even IM me, even if you just want to talk. my Aim Sn is sispoombah89.
