It's a powerful word.
Used SO carefully by American politicians.
Cause God forbid they use it to describe the annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians in Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century.
And God forbid they do anything about what's going on elsewhere!
There is a movie out there called "Screamers," a film created by the politically active band, System of a Down. It has opened my eyes.
The idea that history repeats itself is a truth.
It is true ONLY if something in the past has not been recognized, or justice has not been taken in the hands of those responsible.
The first holocaust of the 20th century went IGNORED, that being the Armenian Genocide.
This had direct influence on future crimes against humanity.
Adolf Hitler himself referred to it at a military conference in 1939 before the invasion of Poland. He was quoted..
"Accordingly, I have placed my death-head formation in readiness with orders to send to death mercilessly and without compassion, men, women, and children of Polish derivation and language. Only thus shall we gain the living space which we need. Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"
Do WHATEVER you can about the genocide going on in Darfur, Sudan as we speak.
Even if it means sending web-faxes, letters, emails to local politicians regarding it.
We can do something. We can all say that we know what is going on and that we are trying to help.
Did you ever notice that our government will only help elsewhere in the world if we are getting something in return?
*cough* OIL *cough*

If we were really getting oil in return, our gas prices wouldn't go up...so the oil theory is outdated and too simple for this and any involvement of ours in the mideastt.
I do agree about the Armenian Genocide, we have to watch out for stuff like that. Another rarely talked about genocide is the Muslim Genocide that went on during the Crusades. To Muslims, it is the equivilent of the Holocaust.
Wow. You really stated all that. My community college had an event today about the genocide in Darfur- the screening of the documentary "Sand and Sorrow" with the BSU. I wish I was there to see it since I didn't get a ride over there. (I am old enough to drive, goddarnit!) Still, we can try our best to do all we can. Can't believe there's another genocide in a different country. I never heard of that one. The faster the Bush Admin. is gone, the better off. We seriously need to pull troops out of Iraq and look at real issues at hand like the issue in Darfur, global wariming (I was stunned when I saw Al Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth'. Imagine what life would have been like if he was elected president and not Bush. I hate the Electoral College for that.), the Armenian genocide as you mentioned, and our own personal problems like the gas and food prices. Medical costs are also a dilemma. What is wrong with the world?
