Good morning. (It's almost noon, but hey, I woke up at 10:30 today.) So, I didn't go to school today because I've kind of got this (slightly embarrassing) medical anomaly going on... It's an incredibly long story; maybe I will save it for another blog on how crappy the medical world is today. Moving on, however, so I have this medical thing going on, which is bad enough to keep me out of school. Here's the problem I have.
To be eligible for exemption from final exams as a senior, a student can miss no more than three days of school during the second semester. Today is my fourth day. The first three days I missed were due to an allergic reaction to a prescription I was taking. (Hives are NOT cool.) Coincidentally, as I have found out, after doing a bit of research on my own today about this medical issue I'm having, today's incident can be directly related to my allergic reaction I had a few weeks back. Yes, apparently, the medicine they gave me for the allergic reaction has caused this new problem. Lovely.
But here I am, a straight A student, ineligible for a waiver of final exams. Because I missed one too many days of school, for conditions I had utterly no control over. I'm a little angry. I'm kind of thinking I shouldn't be punished for this. I plan on talking to the vice principal tomorrow at school about this, to see if we could possibly work something out... It's unlikely, but honestly, it's not like I planned this, you know? Ugh.
Does any other schools have a policy similar to this, or is my school just crazy? Not crazy... I mean, I understand why the policy is in place, but shouldn't there be some exceptions to the rule, and shouldn't my case be one of those exceptions? I'd really appreciate some feedback on this. It's driving me insane!

:-& This is how I feel, by the way. lol

Why should seniors get exempted from final exams in the first place?

Check out the latest entry in the Between The Lines column!
My school has never had anything like this. Every senior has to take finals no matter what. We just take ours a little earlier than the other grades because we graduate a little earlier. Of course we can graduate early (like first semester) which I did. We still take finals though.
Sorry about the whole medical problems though. Maybe you can work something out. I don't see why not, but you know how teachers are now-a-days. They don't even let you go to teh bathroom when you need to go. I've gotten continueous bladder-kidney infections because of this......They're getting better about it though.
I understand how you feel, my high school used the exact same system and I always missed too many days because of extracurricular activities. You may check with an admin though because somtimes if you have a doctors excuse documenting a chronic illness they will exempt you from that rule... the only time I ever exempted was because of a statewide testing incentive.... good luck... hope you get to feeling better
My high school during my first two years had the exemption policy in place that was very similar. You had to miss less than 3 days and have no missing assignments and things like that.
The second semester of my sophomore year that changed. After that no one could get exempt from exams for any reason. Why? Because graduates where coming back feeling overwhelmed from college exams because they never learned good finals techniques. I'll be honest, as much as taken final exams sucked, it really did minimize the college stress when finals came around. My first year of college I met other students who had an exempt policy and their stress levels were extraordinarily high because they didn't know what to expect.
My advice is get a one up on your fellow students and take the exams. Finals can bring down even the brightest students in college if you aren't prepared with good habits.
Think about it...

Well at our school you usually have to take all the test at the end of the year no matter what. However, your senior year, you dont have to take any finals at the end of the year before graduation, except those classes that you are getting college credit in. So for the end of this year, I will only be taking one final exam.
Good Luck on trying to find a loophole though that can still get you out of tests. :)
Why can you exempt yourself from final exams...?
Anyway, being that it's a legitimate medical excuse should mean that it's a legal absense. Therefore, though I don't understand this waiver thing, you should not be punished. Talking to the principal/vice principal might be the best choice.
Well my school does have this policy. However it is slightly different. If you have an excused absence it doesn't count toward your 3 days. But if you are like me (late for 2nd period almost everyday for absolutely no reason) then that's a different story. Our principal is very understanding when it comes to matters like this considering a lot of seniors have appointments(ortho...ect) and college visits. I think this method is much better.... we look forward to getting out a week early!
:dances:
But Good Luck.... hope all goes well!

Thanks, guys, for all the feedback... I'm really glad that our school has the exemption policy available, but it still sucks that if I have to actually take finals, all of my friends will be out of school two weeks before me. Ahh.
Hopefully I can still get exempt though, but if not, I think TomorrowToday is right, it may help me with college. No stressing for me! (Atleast no more than usual)

At my school seniors did not have to take exams. All teachers were not allowed to give finals to seniors considering we got out 3 weeks earlier than everyone else.
I understand your issue and I think that schools should make their policy known to all students each year and there should be exceptions made for seniors and all students.
We live in a world, where students have unexpected illnesses and other things that happen in their lives, the same as employees of the college and continuing students.
