I’m Middle Class. I’ll never go Poor.

“Ewwww! I hate peas! They look funny. I don’t want to eat them!” A piece of a chicken breast, fresh peas, and seasoned carrots falling into the trashcan with the rest of the junk. Thanks to little Sarah. She runs to the back of the kitchen , climbs on top of the shelf, and reaches for the cookie jar. “ Now this is the good stuff!”

Before she can fulfill her tastebuds, her father grabs the cookie out of her hand. She starts crying to her mother. Her mother wants the whining to be silenced by the treat. But dad does’nt want a ruined appetite. He says “ Did you not see how she threw away the rest of her food? There are starving kids in America and around the world that would be dying to eat what’s in your trashcan. We don’t have money to waste! And she doesn’t need that cookie if she can’t eat all her food first.” Now Sarah is throwing a tantrum. Her mother says, “Babe, just give her the cookie. Plus we have plenty of food that can last us for months. We’ll never go broke anyways.”

Mommie should have eaten her words. But they would not fill up her hollow stomach that’s growling for some kind of nourishment. She never thought her family would be struggling to get crumbs in their mouths. She never thought that after using all of her 401(k), savings, income tax, and “play” money , she would still need more money to get other needs paid. She never thought that she might be waving good – bye to her dream house. She never thought that she would have to walk so much that her shoes would develop a hole in them because gas prices prevented her from driving in luxury. She never thought she would see the sadness in her child’s eyes knowing for the first time she would not be able to wipe each tear away with happiness. She never thought her husband would lose his job and they would argue all the time. She never thought she would be poor because she was middle class.

Doesn’t it always seem we sometimes get the short end of the stick? First it was gas prices. Then the food prices started sneaking up on us. People losing houses.Interest rates going through the roof. So far the newest topic of all is: middle class becoming poor class. Not too long ago if you were making at least $30,000.00 (well in tx) then you are in middle class. $100, 000.00 makes you rich. Well now the $100k is the new 30k.The American dollar is weak, our troops are still at war, and health care is expensive. Now to add on to the migraine is becoming poor.

Many middle class people have found their selves on the verge of homelessness. So most people say , “Use the government.” Sure. That’s easy. A lot of middle class people have complained that they get denied for food stamps, WIC, and many other government “helpers.” Reason why is that their household income is is too much. Good luck on saving yourself and your family. Right now the news says that many middle class families are finding a helping hand at some food banks. This is really good but also a problem. The food banks only get so many donations to their charity and they have to make that stretch. So if the majority of people are on the verge of going homeless, who will donate to the charities? Yes the president is issuing everyone $600.00 checks or more but can that help out a lot? They say we are not going to go into recession but it really looks like we are on the verge of it. So before you decide to go spend $ 600 on that Prada purse, $1200 on that Rolex, or get picky about certain foods, you better think twice because pretty soon we will have to be saving every penny and every piece of food.

Well now the $100k is the new 30k.

I hope not -- my mom makes about $50k a year and we barely get by.

I see what you're syaing, though -- interesting read!

Everyone is barely getting by. Like I said even that $600.00 check will not help that much . But thanks for your comment.

well we went from poor to middle class to poor to middle class and it kept going back in forth. There were times I would eat at friends houses because we didn't have food. We are doing ok now but I used to be able to save money and with going to college I can't and grants are hard to find for me. I believe we may go into a depression eventually if we don't choose our next president wisely. President Bush has just screwed us all.

I am here to inform and help:

It's sad to see so many struggling. There are so many houses in foreclosure now. Health care is almost impossible for middle class families without health insurance to get. I am currently paying out of pocket for health care since I don't have any insurance. With the fuel costs, some people can actually SAVE money by being unemployed! So many companies are moving overseas so they are able to pay workers less and not have to provide any benefits. The companies that ARE left tend to go through employment agencies to avoid providing benefits.

What can we do to save the middle class? Soon there will only be the rich and the poor.

I know what you mean by health care. In 2006 I could not afford healthcare and had to pay out of pocket. It sure did hurt my pockets too. Yeah if your unemployed then you are getting by on gas. But if not, they said gas prices are supposed to rise more by the summer. Thanks for your comment.
