Limitations For High School Coaches

It's 6th hour, which means the baseball and softball teams will hit the field, the volleyball team will hit the court, and the track team will run to the track. The athletes will train hard so that they will be able to pull off victories for their school. The fans attend the competitions to see what the athletes have accomplished, but they often don't realize what is going on behind the scenes....with the coaches.

High school coaches, especially football coaches, are becoming more and more harsh on their athletes since the competition continues to rise. For example, if the team loses a game, then they will have an extra long and hard practice the next day so that realize that losing means punishment.

But it's not just coaches being extra harsh, it's the relationships that they gain with some athletes. I knew of a coach who would focus on the number one runner and only her. Everyone else was just their and she never really cared what happened to them. It was almost as if they were pongs just taking up room on the track. So it was a shock when any of them ever did well at anything. I wonder why, she never spent time coaching them, and most of them said they weren't ready for the race ahead of them.

So this coach signed the boys and girls teams up to go to these small invitationals so that her number one runner could face this one great athlete. She didn't care about anyone else, just as long as "her" runner would get what she wanted. Sad thing is, the girl at the other school ended up injured, and no one got any competition that day. When I questioned some of the athletes about what they thought about the meet, some common responses were: "stupid", "too easy", "a blowout", and "not worth my time".

I thought this was bad, but what I found out next was even worse. The coach started to train a girl from a different school so that her number one runner had someone to race against. Not only is this against rules, but it is just flat out wrong. It shows you how much faith she had in her other runners.... none at all.

I honestly believe that this coach was unfair and didn't deserve to be a coach after all of these events. She never gave anyone else a chance to succeed because she didn't care. She was living her dreams through her number one runner, and that was all she wanted.
