Warning: this is kind of out of date because I just brought over from a blog on another site.
Yep, I just quit my first full-time job on Wednesday (23 March, 2008). I was hoping to make it through my six-month lease, or through the 90-probation period (at which point I would have been eligible for health insurance), or give two weeks' notice, or at the very least have another job lined up first, but suddenly decided that enough was enough. I had two job interviews that day in Iowa City, which is at leas half an hour away from Mount Vernon. People were getting tired of giving me rides everywhere, I was more than tired of having to ask, and it was getting more difficult to convince my potential employers to schedule me late enough that I wouldn't have to get off work early, as well as getting difficult to explain my sudden onslaught of doctor appointments, wakes, etc. to my current employers without arousing their suspicion. I decided that was not getting paid nearly enough to put up with the crap detailed below.
A little background: I was working for FBG Service Corporation, the cleaning company that Cornell College employs. I was in charge of most of one dorm on campus. A dorm where it just so happens that I lived last year.
FBG employees have always been on the bottom of the totem pole that is campus services. Res Life, Maintenance, and everyone else gets paid more than us and has better benefits. They lie to us, they ignore our requests, and they repeatedly force us to be the villains in such asinine situations that seem to be highlighted so as to obscure more important issues from the students' view. Then there are issues that are to be expected if you're a janitor at a school, but the apparent stupidity of the students is at such an astounding level that it pretty much bowled me over everyday. I thought -- kind of hoped -- that I would get used to it, but I never did.
So, the straw that broke the camel's back was when my co-worker reminded me that Cornell has no recycling services during breaks because the recycling "program" is entirely run by work-studies, and she made me just throw everything away. After that, I was so shaken up, conflicted, angry, and worried that I couldn't concentrate on the rest of my chores, so I found a notebook, sat down, and wrote the resignation letter that I'd been writing in my head since Friday. Here it is:
It is more with blinding fury than with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation letter (Cleaning Specialist, FBG Service Corporation), effective immediately. I would like to make it perfectly clear that while I still hold FBG Service Corporation in the highest esteem, I cannot conscionably work for the short-sighted, irresponsible, and above all, greedy cesspool that Cornell College has become. I look forward to watching Cornell College burn in the hell that they are helping to create here on Earth, even if I am burning right next to them.
