Global warming seems to be an issue that we as humans are constantly being reminded of. There are scientists that supports it, scientists that are doubting its urgency, it has made its way into politics, and even music. Yet, nothing really is being done about any of it.
One could argue that we have hybrid, and now purely electric cars that are being made and the research is growing every day. But what is the reason behind all the new forms of energy? Is it global warming? I am afraid not. Everything is about money, it always has been and it seems that it always will be. So with oil prices rising, consumers demaned more fuel efficient vehicles, and this is what we got. It gas was still $1.50 a gallon, would we really still see hybrid cars being sold? Of course not, it wouldn't be profitable for the companies and the cars would certainly stay at a mucher higher price than they are at even now.
So even with all of the global warming propaganda, the issue still sits on the backburner when faced with issues like the economy and Iraq. In the last few days, it was released that a large chunk of the Wilkins Ice Shelf would break off next year, as it is currently only connected by a small sheet of ice. The chunk is the size of Connecticut. Will it take great losses for America and the world to understand what we are losing? Global warming is an issue that needs not just to be talked about, but to be acted upon.
Hollywood may be a way to do this. I recently watched a new music video by 30 Seconds to Mars for the song A Beautiful Lie. Completely filmed 200 miles north from the Arctic Circle in Greenland, the video begins with a first hand account of how global warming has affected the inhabitants of lowland areas. The video ends with some facts about the amount of ice that has been lost in Antarctica, and saying "Please Join Us".
So perhaps, in the coming years, more celebrities will use their power to bring the conversations about global warming into actions against global warming. But even with more support, it is really up to the people to decide if it is an issue important enough to choose a president on, or pass a bill on. Global warming can't afford to be in the back of our minds any longer.
