Where’s The Beef?
5/17/07 KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A meat company is recalling 129,000 pounds of beef products in 15 states because of possible E. coli contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
The meat products are made by Davis Creek Meats and Seafood and were made for Gordon Food Service stores, the USDA said Wednesday on its Web site.
The beef products were made between March 1 and April 30 and were shipped to distribution centers and retailers in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
The items under recall include boxes of mechanically tenderized steaks and ground beef of different weights. The boxes are labeled "Est. 1947A".
Symptoms of E. coli include stomach cramps that may be severe and diarrhea that may turn bloody within one to three days. E. coli sometimes can lead to complications including kidney failure.
So if you have something from that company look in your freezers to make sure you don’t have any recalled meat. Seems like the U.S has been having problems with E.coli more now over the past few years, or that more are just published. It makes you think though for one of the most well off countries is in the world why do we seem to be getting more attention for it? I know nothing is perfect and it’s going to happen but should there be more guidelines on meat and other edible products that could end up in our homes?
I think there should be an, even more so, strict guideline, on how meat should be handled before getting to the shelf of supermarkets and stores, I mean you can’t be too safe. 129,000 pounds is a lot of meat and in 30% of U.S states, which seems a bit too much. I suppose only time will tell if this particular case will go as good as any recall case can, meaning no deaths or hospitalization. Will this end up being multiple cases of people dying or am I just overacting?

...and thanks for re-affirming why I'm a vegetarian. :)
There should definitely be more strict standards of meat processing and sanitation of facilities. The conditions of slaughter houses are terrible and disgusting. The exposure to virsues and diseases, over-use of hormones, etcetera, just makes it really unsafe. Not to mention the living conditions and treatment of the animals...but that is a whole other issue.
I think we need to mail the FDA a copy of Fast Food Nation and a DVD of Super-Size Me.

You know what I love about food recalls? By the time they realize there is a problem, most of those who would have had the meat have likely already consumed it and thrown away packages. Gotta love how they tell you to save the package or what not a month later!
