How I'm Making a Difference

This year, I gave up my summer, and I love it.  Sounds crazy, right? Not so much.

You see, I work for an organization called Environment NJ this summer, and it is amazing.  I've only been there for a week now, but I can honestly say that the experience has changed my life.

I am a canvasser, so, basically, my job is to go door to door around different cities and towns in NJ and try to get people involved in current issues concerning their environment, and to promote knowledge and positive progress.

I must admit, it isn't the most glamorous of jobs; I've been chased by dogs, soaked  by sprinklers, screamed at by people who don't want to be bothered, and lost in the middle of nowhere (or at least that's what it seemed like to me at the time).

Insanely enough, though, I wouldn't change any part of it for the world.

I probably sound like a glutton for punishment, but I'm not.  It's just that the feeling that comes with the knowledge that you are making a difference in your community and world every day is amazing, and I would suggest this work to anyone.

Who knows, the biggest change of all might be in you.

I have written countless blogs about our environment and it is so great to hear some one doing something nice and respectful for the community. One great thing you make can do is "Sell a Tree". One tree in it's lifetime will suck up 1 ton of carbon and they may be a great campaign for you. What part of NJ do you live in?

I'm glad you're out there making a real difference. Though I think there could be more efficient (and certainly less hazardous) ways of doing it... such as holding events at local libraries, passing out pamphlets on campuses...

I strongly believe that one person can make all the difference. This summer I am working at a zoo as a naturalist- I teach whoever comes to my cart about animals, the environment, conservation, and preservation. Even though the pay isn't wonderful, I know that I encourage children all day to recycle, volunteer, and choose wise pets. For example, we have a serval who was once someone's pet. This wild cat attacked a small dog, was confiscated, and given to us. After telling this story to a child one day, he exclaimed, "I will never have a wild animals as a pet!" I knew from that moment that what I was doing was more than a summer job- it's one step to helping kids make this a great place to live. Keep up with the efforts! *Pats on back*
