If you haven't heard, new legislation is being initiated across the country that could mean that if your jeans hang low in public, you'll be paying for it.

Read the story here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4963512/

In short, many cities throughout the country are beginning to make laws, known as “Saggy Pants Bills,” banning people from wearing jeans that are so loose and/or low that they show their boxers or their butt. Dallas and Atlanta are two examples of such cities. In Louisiana, one town has gone as far as to punish offenders of this policy with six months in jail and a $500 fine. The trend of low-riding jeans is believed to have started in prison, where inmates weren’t given belts to wear, but soon spread to rap music videos and eventually, much of the country’s urban population—both gangsters as well normal high-school kids.

I think that if passed in my city, this law would have a huge impact. I see guys at my school every day exposing more than I want to see, and I think more than others care to look at also. I think that although exposing your underwear is considered fashionable to some people, it makes you look lazy, like you don’t know how to dress yourself properly. However, how you dress yourself is more a question of how much you respect yourself, rather than how much you respect other people. Ultimately, Americans should be able to choose how they dress—with the resulting consequence that they may look ridiculous. However, I can partly see where the argument is coming from—people who dress sloppy like that make our country look bad, and expose people to things they don’t want to see.

This debate affects us because of several reasons. The first is obvious: if the law is passed in your city, people will be forced to clothes that fit them. Besides from that though, this law has hidden implications: some say that because it is mostly African-American and Mexican men that wear their pants like that, that the law is targeting and discriminating against those two groups. Also, people feel they should have the freedom to dress according to their own choices, and that the government is encroaching on their lives, their culture, and their freedom of expression. For this reason, “saggy pants bills” aren’t the real problem. The infringements on our Constitutional rights are the more important issue.

lol. I agree that the jeans shouldn't be worn so low. I don't know why some guys like to do that. What are they trying to show off? Why do they have to buy jeans that are wayyy too big for them? I think this is aiming towards teenagers who wear "gangsta" clothes as your picture showed. Then again, if that's fashion...can they really stop it? I don't think so. It's just annoying to me personally to see guys pulling their pants up every time they walk or something.

Let's be fair here - women aren't generally permitted to expose themselves and their underwear in public, so why should men?

It's kind of pathetic that legislation is necessary to enforce good old common sense. I laugh when I hear about criminals that get caught running away because their baggy pants tripped them up.

I think this legislation is ridiculous. People should be able to wear what they want, without the government imposing on them. Whether it's more than people want to see or not. I see more than I was to see when an overweight person wears an excrutiantingly tight shirt. Why not ban that too? It's ridiculous how much people want to ban now just because they don't like it, not basing it on any judgement, moral or whatever.

i don't understand why guys think this is a good look. i think it looks nasty. they have to walk with their legs so far apart so that their jeans do not fall off. my son tried to wear his clothes like that. i would not let him walk out the door, i made him go change. i saw this man he had to be in his late 30's and his jeans were like that. it was not a pretty thing to look at.

i mean i understand the basic reason for the stating of this law..

but its kind of pushing it a little far..

i honestly believe that people have a right to dress the way they like.. even if others dont approve..

if this is being taken into so should other fashion trends..
we've all seen women wearing very provocative things.. and the punks with the mohawks and the chains... it seems as though only one group is being targeted..

then again it is just a fashion trend so it should pass with time..

there are other things we should be worried about...=]

I think that this law is necessary and I am all for it because it is extremly annoying to see boys and heir butts hanging out but I do believe that the law is pushing it a little too far. Nobody likes to be told what to wear and just because others dont like it doesnt mean their should be a law against it. It is a fashion statement and everybody has the right to wear whatever fashions they please. I know I would be mad if someone told me I couldnt wear skinny jeans or tank tops anymore. I do however believe this rule would be good for public schools. That would be a great place to enforce this rule.

I don't understand:
1. Why our government feels it has the right to tell us what to wear & how to wear it. Even though I don't wear baggy jeans, I think this is rediculous.

2. What will getting rid of baggy jeans do to help our society? Shouldn't our government be focusing on drugs, national debt or even that whole WAR thing? Other countries are mocking us, calling baggy jeans & showing underwear the "boxer rebellion" [creative, right? ha i think its funny!]

How about ... we all wear identical uniforms, jumpsuits even, believe in the same thing & only speak when we are spoken to.
God [what ever God you believe in] Bless America

Lol these are all good points.

Sometimes I wonder about the legislation we try and pass. I absolutely agree that we should reassess our focus on some real issues.
