Is Patriotism Dead

Is patriotism dead? I've asked myself this again and again, and all i've really done in doing so is further frustrate myself with the status of this country. Yes, America is one of the most powerful nations in the world, and yes, we're one of the most technologically advanced (militarily speaking) and whatnot, but does anybody really actually care about America anymore? Some would say yes, and yea, the actions post 9-11 proved that Americans were still proud to serve their country. Still proud to stand up and say "Hells yea, i'm an American and i'm proud of it." Ironically though, is that really what it takes for us as a people, and a country to get motivated? Is the death of a little over 6000 people reason to get motivated, absolutely, but is that really what it should take? Look at things now though. Do people really care about the country?? Naw, not really. We're in a war that hardly anybody agrees with (yes, even some of our troops are included in that group), the economy is going to the crapper, people are losing jobs left and right (myself included), and we've got a president that despite his good intentions has gotten us into a pit of crap that we're by no means digging ourselves out of anytime soon.....Americans have always been known as a reslient people. Used to we were known as the people of you back us into a corner, you best prepare yourself b/c you're seriously gonna have your hands full. Now though, we're a bunch of people that all it seems we're wanting to do is look for the next handout. Look for the next easiest way out, yea, thats the ticket. So ask yourself, are you proud to be an American, and not just in the stereotypical Southern "You proud to be 'Merican boy??" sense....Really, are you?? If you saw someone burning an American flag what would you do?? Go over and belt them, or just say it's freedom of speech??

I would say that's freedom of speech, but I won't go further with that right now.

Instead, I have a question. Why should be people be proud of the way our country is going? I think that both sides of the political spectrum can agree that there isn't really that much of a reason. Being a patriot doesn't mean supporting this President, or any President. It doesn't mean driving around with an American Flag on you car. It doesn't mean supporting the actions taken by the government. It doesn't mean quietly accepting what you disagree with. It means doing something, anything, to try and get the nation on the right track, whatever you happen to think that is.

Hey Guys. Excellent questions raised on both posts!

"So ask yourself, are you proud to be an American...Really, are you?"

Yes, I am. But I as a proud American, I am very concerned with the way my country is heading.

Our Congress has spent my kid's, as well as my grandchildren's futures away with spending money they don't have and borrowing the rest. The national debt is at about $8 trillion right now, and growing fast.

We're tied up in a war in Iraq that had absolutely nothing to do with September 11th and had no WMDs. and

And those responsible for that (Bin Laden) are still at large.

In other words, I am a proud American, but I'm a worried one too.
