Alcoholism: a disease...

"Anything can be related to psychology."

These words came from my AP Psychology teacher's mouth in our first week of the class. I'm thinking more along the lines of brain chemistry, thought process, loads of theories, and many experiments that don't really have much purpose other than to tell us something we already know. I wasn't the most enthusiastic student.
A week or so more into the class I was all eyes, ears, and every brain chemical I had was working to focus on my psychology studies. Teachers kind of know what they're talking about, haha.

Now to the point, recently our class took a field trip to a rehabilitaion center. In which we recieved a flyer explaining the disease of alcoholism that stated three components: Mind, Body, and Spirit. The center follows and firmly believes in the AA program and proceeded to summarize the way it works on the patients of the center. Patients being the "addicts" that reside in the recovery center.
When time came for questions, [mind you, my teacher reminded us that we weren't at school anymore and encouraged us to speak our minds] one was answered that dealt with approach. Then came my horrible realization, that an "addict" can't really be helped. Not if the help isn't solely administered by his or her own soul.
"The one thing you can do for an addict, that you're not going to be able to do, is nothing. Absolutely nothing." Words of the rehab director hit hard. Last week was an eye opener to the awful terrible aspects of addiction.

Stopping an addict is like stopping a train. Good luck. Many addicts say that even though they go to those AA meetings, the meetings bore them and waste their time. Others that believe in the AA meeting are later shattered by the truth when they wonder why they can't stop themselves from looking at that liquor bottle , or why the smell of alcohol moistens their mouth. Yes like you said they must find it in them to stop picking up that bottle. That bottle can't take away all your pain or make you feel good forever .

Comments are appreciated too. Thanks.

Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence is a medical term with a deliberately more precise meaning than the problems that can occur, sometimes as one-offs, through an uncharacteristic binge. Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions. In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages despite the health problems and negative social consequences it causes.
